GENERAL FUNCTION
The Camp Ranger is assigned one of three County campgrounds to assist campers with reservations, sell wood and ice, keep the campgrounds clean, enforce park ordinances, and perform necessary bookkeeping. Act as a Wood County Parks Department representative to campers, visitors and the general public.

Approximate Season Schedule:
  • Mid-April through the week prior to Memorial Day – 40 hours/wk.
  • Week prior to Memorial Day through Labor Day Weekend –60 hours/wk. (40 hours + 20 hours OT)
  • After Labor Day weekend through the end of October – 40 hours/wk.

DIRECTS THE WORK OF
Assigned helpers and/or campground host.

RESPONSIBILITIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Maintain positive contact with campers, visitors and general public to insure a pleasant visit to campground and assist with problem resolutions.
2. Assist campers with reservation system.
3. Assist selling firewood and ice to campers during designated hours.
4. Record money, when received or collected from wood, and ice sales. Reconcile records with Parks and Forestry office, consistent with established standards, and make bank deposits as required.
5. Clean restrooms and shower buildings, consistent with established standards provided by the Lead Maintenance Worker.
6. Enforce park ordinances pertaining to campgrounds, boat landings and other park areas, on an on-going basis. Report and complete required department forms regarding vandalism, maintenance requests, accidents, etc.
7. Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County. Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.
8. Ability to work with the Host and other employees of the campground and department by facilitating an environment of trust, teamwork, compromise, and a willingness to assist & collaborate with one another to resolve issues.

B. OTHER JOB DUTIES
1. Inspect buildings and lock up after shelter reservations.
2. Lock designated gates in park areas, consistent with established standards.
3. Notify campers in the event of storm watches and/or storm warnings, to ensure public safety.
4. Any other duties as may be assigned.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma is required. Must be 18 years old. Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license is required. Demonstrated ability to communicate positively with public and co-workers necessary. Reading, writing, adding, and subtracting is needed for bookkeeping and writing permits. Basic, everyday living skills are needed, as is the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Computer and tablet experience helpful. Ability to understand and enforce Park ordinances within the campground, boat landings and other Park and Forestry areas.

Basic equipment used: calculator, computer, tablet, printer, two-way radio, hand tools (hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, chainsaws, shovels, brooms), first aid equipment, cleaning supplies, golf cart, and truck.

Note: The Camp Ranger position is a seasonal position, with a maximum total of 1,039 hours.
