The database developer builds and maintains database systems for business intelligence/marketing analytics applications for Dixon Schwabl agency and clients. The ideal candidate works with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals including data visualization specialists, brand planners/strategists, media strategists/buyers, content marketing and automation strategists, and account executives to understand the needs of our clients, create actionable plans and develop solutions.

This role will evaluate the needs of the client, business/marketing strategy, specifics of the campaign/project, and the data that is available and creates a blueprint for creating, testing and maintaining databases and data systems that become a single source of truth for the agency and clients, and enable advanced analysis and insights.

The database developer is involved in the efficient and effective design of databases to meet scalability, security, performance and reliability requirements. The ideal candidate manages user access to data systems, works with vendors and our internal IT team to create and execute security measures that comply with national and international privacy regulations, and mitigate risks presented by natural disasters and hacking activity.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes data needs of both internal and external clients through intentional conversation and clarification of objectives
  • Evaluates feasibility and costs of database implementation
  • Architects, installs and configures database system
  • Builds + maintains API connections
  • Ensures extract, transform, load (ETL) processes are effectively deployed and followed for required data sources
  • Designs databases that meet the needs and expectations of its users: efficient, effective, accurate, reliable
  • Ensures all data (company + client) is logically structured, processed, stored, and sufficiently backed-up; develops recovery specifications
  • Makes data available to authorized persons (e.g., visualization team)
  • Creates and maintains up-to-date documentation on processes and structure
  • Maintains a data inventory: what is available, what is used
  • Creates plans and system requirements for data protection and data integrity in conjunction with the database administrator and IT
  • Designs user interface that is easy to navigate
  • Instructs visualization team how to navigate and use the database
  • Evaluates opportunities to automate internal processes, including data valuation + quality assurance
  • Collaborates with database administrator and IT to maintain and optimize servers and databases
  • Prepares users by conducting training
    • This is for internal and external users. Help to drive forward continued education for using the current tools to help drive increased adoption and use
    • Provides education across agency teams – account service, etc.
  • Continues professional development to not only stay current but ahead of the curve
  • Provides learnings, education and blog content to support agency positioning

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
  • Expertise with AWS environment
  • Expertise with SQL server data tools, specifically for MySQL
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office
  • Expertise with third-party APIs and ETL processes
  • Expertise with Python, R, C#
  • Expertise with database design, maintenance and management
  • Expertise with requirements analysis
  • Familiarity with .NET Framework preferred, including programming in C# & VB
  • Experience with database security protocols – security certifications a plus
  • Knowledge of operating systems
  • Demonstrable project management experience

*Travel is required for all employees to quarterly Agency all-hands meetings, with an additional 10-15% potential travel for client engagement as needed*
