This position is currently scheduled to work Tuesday - Saturday from 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Under the direction of the Facilities Operations Supervisor or other administrator as assigned, climb trees of various heights, using belts, lines, and similar equipment; prune, care for and maintain park, shade and street trees; perform related work as assigned.

Examples of Duties

The following list of duties describes the various types of work that may be performed and the level of technical complexity of the assignment(s), and is not intended to be an all-inclusive list.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Climb trees of various heights, often very tall trees, using belts, lines and similar equipment; use saws, axes, polesaws, pruning poles, power tools, long handled clippers and similar tools; trim, shape and otherwise maintain street and park trees.
  • Remove dead, broken or superfluous branches or tops of trees; clear street lights and overhead wires; remove stumps, chip brush, cut and remove roots; remove rotted tree areas by chiseling.
  • Disinfect and treat cavities with cement or other appropriate material; remove diseased standing or fallen trees.
  • Inspect trees within all district properties to identify any underlying issues, such as disease, faults, and insects.
  • Mix insecticides and sprays; using power sprayer, spray trees, plants and shrubs on streets and in parks.
  • Act as grounds person assisting other members of the crew in trimming trees and in lowering and stacking brush, cuttings and shredded materials.
  • Drive trucks and operate and maintain power equipment such as chainsaws ranging in guide bar length from 14"- 30", chipper, hydraulic buckets, root cutters and power hoists.
  • Prepare basic records, including daily worksheets, equipment inspection reports, accident reports and maintenance requests.
  • Perform general maintenance during inclement weather.
  • Respond to emergency calls regarding fallen trees or limbs.
  • Perform necessary traffic control to ensure safety of cars, staff, students, pedestrians and tree crew in work areas.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, techniques and equipment used in tree climbing, including rigging and relevant safety practices.
  • Principles and practices of arboriculture, including species identification.
  • Planting, pruning and maintenance methods.
  • Safety practices and equipment pertaining to the work.
  • Proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools, such as pruning poles, saws, axes, shovels, ladders, hydraulic pruners, power saws, brush clippers, stump cutters, hydraulic buckets, power hoists and tree climbing equipment.

ABILITY TO:

  • Climb very tall trees skillfully and safely.
  • Prune, trim and maintain trees while working at considerable height.
  • Use appropriate safe work practices and equipment.
  • Keep basic written records of work performed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others.
  • Observe health and safety regulations.
  • Respond to emergency call-out to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent and three (3) years of skilled experience in tree climbing, topping, trimming and maintenance of a wide variety of very tall shade and park trees.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record.

Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in personal or district vehicle to various sites.

Must be willing to work in tall trees and outdoors in all weather conditions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Outdoor environment from heights on ladders and/or in trees.
  • Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.
  • Constant interruptions.
  • Inclement weather.
  • Emergency call out.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Agility to perform job duties while working in tree tops or from ladders or hydraulic buckets.
  • Walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Seeing to perform duties.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects as assigned by position.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climbing ladders and working from heights.

HAZARDS:

  • Working at heights.
  • Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
  • Working outdoors during inclement weather.
  • Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
  • Potential for contact with dissatisfied or hostile individuals.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Positions in this job classification typically work 40 hours/week for 12 months/year.

The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Applicants selected for permanent or substitute assignments are required to pay for fingerprinting services and obtain Tuberculosis results prior to beginning work. Hayward Unified School District does not pay for employee health and welfare benefits.

Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. Health benefit costs are 100% employee paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employees may opt out of health coverage upon presentation of proof of alternate coverage.

Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The District contributes the full premium for "employee only". Any additional premium will be employee paid.
