Job description

The Veterans Service Representative assists veterans and their dependents in the preparation, presentation and prosecution of all lawful claims for benefits to which they are entitled. Counsels veterans regarding benefits entitlements, assists clients in filing appeals for denied claims. Travels to established locations within the service area on a regular basis or as needed to assist clients and/or perform outreach.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must possess the ability to comprehend complex laws and regulations and apply to casework and communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Experience working with the general public involving interviewing and compiling information required.
Customer service experience and skills required.
Computer experience, including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Exchange is required. Occasional overnight travel is required.
Some knowledge of medical terminology and laws and regulations governing veteran’s benefits preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
Must be eligible for accreditation to represent veterans before the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Graduation from an accredited college or university with significant course work in law and/or counseling is preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the education requirement.

Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a background check. Depending on the position, selected candidates may be required to complete the Statement of Economic Interests form, (VA Code 2.2-3114).

Writing samples may be completed at the interview.
