Undergraduate Academic Advising Center (UAAC) staff explain university policies and procedures and as such are responsible for fully understanding all policies and procedures as well as academic requirements. The Academic Advisor serves as a liaison and fosters relationships with other advisors, faculty, offices and departments throughout the university. They present academic information to parents and students during orientation, as well as in first-year classes. Academic Advisors actively participate in the continual advisement of students as they progress in their degree program until graduation.

Primary/Principal Responsibilities - % of Time

60% of time

General Academic Advising: Maintain an advising caseload and provide advising to all undergraduate students who need information relating to: declaring a major, minor or a double major, navigating University resources such as study abroad programs and career planning, course selection to maintain progress in their degree program, exploring electives, exploring extra-curricular activities to enhance their academic program, referrals for support services and general advising related to their overall academic plan.

Guide students to graduate in a timely manner by teaching students to develop multi-year academic plans that include planning for study abroad, internships and leadership roles on campus.

Ensure successful progression through degree program by conducting assessments of student academic programs for compliance with academic requirements and documenting all advising interactions. Impact overall student satisfaction, success and retention through providing the above services.

15% of time

Supplemental Advising Activities: Act as a liaison to Academic Departments to support advising efforts across campus and to share major-specific advising information with the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center (UAAC).

Contribute to an environment of teamwork and support by representing the UAAC on Student Success Divisional Committees designed to build and maintain community within the division and to promote our services to the campus community.

15% of time

Specialized Advising, Outreach, Presentations: Maintain and grow relationships with students in targeted cohorts to increase program satisfaction by addressing advising issues unique to their cohort (e.g. transfer students, first-year students, student athletes, undeclared majors etc.).

Conduct class visits and cohort-specific advising workshops. Participate in outreach projects to targeted cohorts (e.g. stop-outs, early alerts, academic warnings, seniors, etc.) in order to increase awareness of Division of Student Success services and offer appropriate assistance.

Play an active role in all New Student Orientation sessions by presenting academic information to students and parents and ensuring that all incoming students are fully registered with an appropriate course schedule based on their academic program.

10 % of time

Community: Demonstrate engagement in our community by assisting in a number of undergraduate student programs or events (occasional nights and weekends). Adapt to the changing needs of the Division of Student Success and carry out other duties as required.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in education, college administration, counseling, or other related field.
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience in a college setting working with undergraduate students in an advising, coaching or administrative capacity, or similar experience at a high school level.
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently, flexible attitude towards daily routine
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication as well as detail-oriented skills.
  • Proven ability working with a diverse student, faculty and public population.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills. Strong customer service orientation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, experience with student information systems, and willingness to learn new software as needed.
  • Ability to travel as needed for training or conferences.
