The Accountant 2 reports to the Director of Accounting Services and Reporting and performs financial duties using a broad knowledge of economic and financial information and an advanced knowledge of spreadsheet and database applications. Responsibilities include research and assembling data and preparing schedules and graphic materials for financial presentations, reconciling selected accounting funds, assisting with the University and Foundation year-end closing activities, and providing support to the Director of Accounting Services, Controller and Associate Vice President for Finance as needed. The Accountant 2 supports the day-to-day operations of accounts payable as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

- Assists in the development of best practice policies and procedures for Accounting Services to include accounts payable.
- Assists in monitoring Accounting Services processes for efficiency and accuracy.
- Analyzes, reconciles, balances, and maintains selected accounting funds.
- Analyze monthly Banner Finance financial reports for above funds and prepare corrections and adjusting and closing entries as needed.
- Analyze expenditure transfers, journal entry requests, and other transactions for errors and provide correction as needed.
- Provide assistance with preparation of files related to positive pay and direct deposit submission.
- Provide directed research, present findings, and make recommendations for accounting and finance software, reporting practices, new accounting pronouncements, and other related research as requested.
- Assist in the development and preparation of reports and dashboards for presentation.
- Prepare or assist with preparation and/or review of required reports including, but not limited to, unclaimed property, President’s expenditures, IPED’s, Unrelated Business Income tax, etc.
- Assist with preparation of annual university and foundation financial statements under FASB and GASB guidelines as needed.
- Review and analyze income/expense information for various funds, orgs, accounts and program codes to determine if any corrections are needed.
- Prepare required entries to ensure University records are correct and balance to the Edison system.
- Perform Edison review and reconciliation including running reports from the State of Tennessee’s capital projects ledgers and reconcile to University records.
- Determine whether fund balances for grant funds are reasonable, working in conjunction with grants accountant.
- Develop and design computer programs/spreadsheet to facilitate reporting functions for management, finance staff, and other departments.
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
- Ability to accurately conform to reporting and accounting requirements.

- Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and Ellucian HE Banner.

- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.
- Ability to maintain files accurately in paper and in software programs.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to plan, prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related field.
- Minimum of one (1) year of accounting experience.
- Proficient experience with computer software (e.g. Banner, Word, Excel)
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Business Related field preferred.
- Previous accounting experience in Higher Education or with fund accounting preferred.
- Experience with Ellucian Banner Finance experience preferred.
- Experience with the State of Tennessee Edison System preferred.
- A background and credit history check will be required of the successful applicant.
