Description of Position:
The position will primarily support the retention and success of the CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) through the provision of academic, vocational, and personal counseling. This position will also include working with EOPS/CARE and General Students.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties for this position which will include counseling, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may be in the evening program. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Providing academic, career and personal counseling through one-on-one counseling appointments and group sessions, including CalWORKs, EOPS/CARE and general students.

2. Guiding students in developing and reviewing student educational plans.

3. Developing and implementing CalWORKs student success and retention workshops and community building activities.

4. Providing referrals to on and off campus resources to support educational retention, success and mental well being.

5. Assisting in the outreach, recruitment and orientation of new CalWORKs students.

6. Participating in special program activities.

7. Assisting students with decision-making and the exploration of their educational, career, and personal goals.

8. Working with students to develop educational plans.

9. Adhering to the schedule that has been developed with the Department Chairpersons, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments.

10. Promoting the philosophy that integrates counseling and mentoring to support student learning.

11. Participating in required training and activities such as conferences, regional meetings, outreach, orientations for students, community activities & social/cultural events, field trips, mentorship, advisory groups, etc.

12. Participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide.

13. Creating a positive environment that provides students with the support/motivation likely to enable them to transfer.

14. Maintaining current knowledge of counseling techniques and other effective student support intervention strategies.

15. Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.

16. Performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degree (earned degrees must be from an accredited university): a). A masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development; OR b). A valid California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing full-time counseling; OR c). The equivalent. If you do not possess the EXACT minimum qualifications (i.e. you do not possess the exact degree listed) and believe that you meet the minimum qualifications because of equivalent educational or professional background, please complete and upload the equivalency form in the attachment section of the application or the equivalent (as documented on the equivalency form: https://www.dvc.edu/faculty-staff/hr/pdfs/Equivalency%20for%20Masters%20Degree.pdf AND: a). Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college coursework predominately relating to ethnic minorities or persons challenged by language, social, or economic disadvantages OR b). Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling filed-work courses in a community college. EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominately with ethnic minorities or persons challenged by language, social, or economic disadvantages AND: a). Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons challenged by language, social, or economic disadvantages.

Desirable Qualifications:
Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse, academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of student parent community college students.

Prior work experience supporting special populations, including low-economic, educationally disadvantaged students and single parent students.

Demonstrated experience and ability to motivate, counsel, and support traditionally underrepresented students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds;

Community college counseling experience, including creating comprehensive educational plans and understanding transfer process into the UC, CSU, and private university systems;

Demonstrated experience in planning, overseeing, facilitating, and leveraging innovative counseling practices to implement workshops, orientations, student success programming, and student success programs serving historically underrepresented and/or CalWORKs, EOPS/CARE students.
