Description of Duties:

Academic Programs and the Office of Admissions promote work/life flexibility.

The Admissions Counselor reports to the Director of Admissions and is responsible for recruiting, identifying, and selecting talented secondary students who show potential for success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from across the state of North Carolina.

Recruitment

This position will manage a recruitment territory (e.g., building and maintaining relationships with regional secondary school counselors, community-based organizations, alumni, etc.); independently plan and schedule day, evening, and weekend admissions presentations at middle/high schools and community-based organizations; ensure that recruitment strategies align with the set goals for the UNC System and NCSSM; contact and follow up with groups and individuals who may facilitate scheduling events that can be hosted at NCSSM-Durham. Additionally, this position has responsibilities to establish, maintain, and assess strategic initiatives that support diversity enrollment goals and NCSSM retention efforts. Responsible for identifying and recruiting students from diverse backgrounds, disadvantaged served, and poverty-impacted communities.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

Assist the Director of Admissions in planning, promoting, and supporting admissions diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programming for the on-campus student body for both NCSSM campuses; work with the Associate Directors with planning initiatives that provide DEI-focused reader education and training for selection committee members and the Student Ambassador program.

Counseling

Advise, support, and provide guidance to prospective students and families regarding the application and enrollment process, extenuating circumstances, and special needs throughout the application process. Provide insight concerning targeted demographic populations, assist non-finalist families, and serve as a resource in the state regarding educational enrichment opportunities.

Application Review and Processing

Assist team members in collecting, reviewing, and evaluating credentials and documents to determine an applicant's admissibility, processing of transcripts for all programs, and reviewing and confirming congressional districts.

Events

Contribute to the logistics of all NCSSM-Durham Admissions events; work with staff members on logistics; and assist students and families with information about NCSSM-Durham events.

This position requires 40% of travel within the State of NC. NCSSM provides vehicles for staff traveling on behalf of the Office of Admissions.

This position requires a clean driving record.

Some nights and weekends are required. The position may be eligible for a hybrid/flexible work schedule.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated understanding of gifted high school-age populations.

  • Clear cultural competency skills and a thorough understanding of diversity as it relates to recruitment and education.

  • Previous experience working with underrepresented and marginalized groups

  • Ability to analyze admissions data and trends to foretell changes in URM enrollment patterns and develop programs and support systems to respond.

  • Outstanding communicator with strong interpersonal and presentation skills who can speak confidently with prospective students, families, and school counselors from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and manage competing deadlines.

  • Initiate and implement projects independently.

  • Knowledge of secondary education curriculum in the state of North Carolina.

  • Proficiency in appropriate software systems, including Google Docs Suite, email, and Microsoft Office; experience with Blackbaud is preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Graduation from a four-year college or university. 3-5 years experience in higher or secondary education.

A valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions is required, and the ability to drive for extended periods in various traffic conditions.
