Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber is an advanced professional nurse who is responsible for the provision of comprehensive care to well and ill incarcerated adult and adolescent populations. The practitioner demonstrates a high degree of clinical expertise in providing preventive and primary care in the correctional setting. This practitioner educates inmates to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health, and intervene in acute and chronic illness. This practitioner will function independently in managing the direct and indirect care of incarcerated individuals in collaboration with all disciplines employed or practicing at the institutional Health Services Unit. The practitioner will participate in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of care and education programs and protocols used by the health care staff to meet the needs of incarcerated individuals who exhibit health problems across the continuum from prevention to complex medical and/or psychiatric conditions.
Salary Information

This position is in pay schedule/range 11-01 with a starting annual salary of up to $104,665, depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. Pay on appointment for current state employees may vary according to the applicable pay transaction provisions of the State Compensation Plan, Wisconsin Administrative Code, and statutes. A twelve-month probationary period is required. Telecommuting options not available for these positions.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.
The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency of employment.
The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
All state employees must report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not and provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.

Qualifications

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
  • Applicants must have a current Wisconsin licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber or be licensed in another state and eligible to obtain licensure by time of appointment. For more information regarding licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber, please click HERE .
  • Must be certified in basic CPR/AED and maintain recertification per licensure requirements
  • Must have a valid personal DEA number.
Qualified Candidates will have experience : Providing preventive services, care of episodic illness and injury, emergency care, and manage stable chronic illness in a team relationship. Applying nursing theory, nursing process, and nursing standards of care. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Working in an independent setting under general supervision. Maintaining a helpful and understanding attitude towards individuals exhibiting hostile or other negative behavioral traits. Applying knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, pharmacology and management of acute and chronic health problems. Working with a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural population.
