About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low-income, low-literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. Help generate resources to aid in the fight against adult illiteracy by serving with The Alliance’s Affordable Housing, Asset Building Program as a Resource Development VISTA. The Alliance is a leading nonprofit comprised of an amazing team that hails from 26 countries and speaks over 20 languages. The Alliance welcomes and empowers refugees, immigrants, and underserved residents who face financial, educational, health, language, or cultural barriers to realizing their dreams. The Alliance’s Housing Program offers One-on-One Counseling Sessions, Financial Planning & Budgeting, Developing Action Plans, Rental Counseling, Literacy on Eviction Prevention, Tenants’ Rights and Responsibilities, Pre-Purchase Housing Counseling, Evaluation of Housing Options, Education on the Process of Homebuying, Educational Workshops, and Referrals to Community Resources. ** This position is included with a rental assistance program that is offered by The Alliance for VISTA Members. **

Member Duties : Become a Resource Development VISTA and play a vital role in developing and implementing! Focusing on building capacity and grant funding within The Alliance’s Affordable Housing, Asset Building Program to serve the low income-low literacy adult community building developmental capacity and community networks within the host organization. The Resource Development VISTA will implement a resource development and stewardship plan for the organization. The VISTA member will assist with strengthening community partnerships for collaborative projects and funding opportunities, which allows for streamlined and expanded services. Additionally, the Resource Development VISTA will strengthen relationships with donors, which will improve The Alliance's ability to sustainably serve a low-income adult literacy client population. The VISTA will mobilize local resources to increase the capacity of adult literacy programs to build lasting solutions to poverty.
