The Cancer Center has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Information Sciences Professional position.

Nature of Work

Information Science Professionals utilize applied or computational mathematical analyses for a wide array of different applications and to solve complex problems. Experiments may include text and image interpretation, coding, ground theory methodology for the analysis of certain data, and quantum state analyses. Senior Information Science Professionals may also perform duties in labs that use primarily electronic equipment, artificial intelligence, and algorithm. Some Assignments will not move beyond this level.

The Cancer Center is looking to hire a full-time Information Sciences Professional (open rank position based on experience) to perform image analysis on animal image datasets (MRI, PET, SPECT, CT, optical imaging, and ultrasound) within the Animal Imaging Shared Resource (AISR) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. This position will also perform QC and QA imaging tests on the Bruker 9.4 Tesla MRI, PerkinElmer Quantum CT, PerkinElmer IVIS Spectrum and assist the Shared Resource Manager and Colorado Research Informatics Office (CRIO) with all image archiving and storage. The successful candidate will also teach workshops and classes for staff, faculty, graduate, and postgraduate students on Image Analysis, together with other members of the AISR and Radiology.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Perform basic and advanced multi-modal image analysis for animal-based imaging studies:
    • Volumetric and 3D-structural analysis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) image sets using vendors (Bruker, PerkinElmer) advanced image analysis software
    • Metabolic dynamic tracer kinetic analysis for 18F- and 11C-PET/CT and PET/MRI studies using Bruker and Siemens medical imaging software
    • Signal intensities/ counts for fluorescent and bioluminescent optical imaging
    • Advanced image analysis (including DWI, DCE-MRI, PET SUV, CT bone structure)
    • Image fusion from multi-modal scanners (PET/MRI, PET/CT, optical/CT)
    • Develop MATLAB-based algorithms for image analysis and interpretation
  • Hold regular training sessions for our AISR users on image analysis software and basic image analysis
  • A routine maintenance of the Bruker MRI scanner, Perkin Elmer IVIS Spectrum and Quantum CT
  • Communicate with research personnel regarding technical issues during image analysis
  • Train and supervise Dr. Serkova’s students in all image analysis and data analysis; teach Animal Imaging workshops campus- and State-wide
  • Operate as an AISR technician by coordinating all UCCC Core activities including iLab scheduling, invoicing, and reporting
  • Work closely with all our team members as well as the Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Veterinarian OLAR team
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders in the area of bioinformatics and data analysis
  • Perform scientifically rigorous data management and bioinformatic analyses
  • Develop and disseminate a variety of tools designed to access relevant clinical and sample data
  • Develop and implement complex analyses pipelines, programming, and data visualization techniques for multi-layered imaging and -omics datasets (mostly metabolomics.)
  • Creatively and effectively integrate data from multiple sources and image modalities/ scanners to accelerate discoveries
  • Assist with the design and development of major imaging-related programming projects
  • Write custom scripts to access imaging databases and analyze data
  • Write custom web tools for PIs and other stakeholders
  • Independently and creatively identify bioinformatic and data management solutions
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members
  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs . Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies
  • Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership
  • Provide the image data science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of biomedical investigators and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines
  • Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications

Entry:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA) or higher (Master of Science) in computer science, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, engineering, physics, imaging, or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

Intermediate:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA) or higher (Master of Science) in computer science, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, engineering, physics, imaging, or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • One (1) year image/ data management and bioinformatic analysis experience

Senior:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA) or higher (Master of Science) in computer science, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, engineering, physics, imaging, or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • Two (2) years’ image data management and bioinformatic analysis experience

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be willing and able to enter high magnetic field (no pacemakers, no implants, no ferromagnetic body piercing, no infusion pumps) – please refer to MRI safety guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science, physics, or related field
  • Experience with image analysis, image processing and convolution, in-vivo/medical imaging, some knowledge in anatomy
  • MATLAB, R, Python experience
  • Three (3) years of experience analyzing data using high-performance computing (Senior Professional)

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

  • Entry: $50,112 to $63,742
  • Intermediate: $54,534 to $69,367
  • Senior: $58,955 to $74,911

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
