Part-time Archaeologist | South Burlington, VT | Montpelier, VT| Rutland, VT

VHB’s growing South Burlington, VT office is seeking a part-time Archaeologist to work with our expanding, company-wide Cultural Resources Group. Key responsibilities of the position include assisting in the preparation of cultural resource studies and environmental-related documents for energy, transportation, planning, housing, and land development projects. This opportunity has the potential to evolve into a full-time position and the ideal candidate has the option to work from VHB's South Burlington, Montpelier or Rutland VT offices in a hybrid capacity.

We are looking for sharp, creative problem solvers who are passionate about archaeological and historical properties. By working closely with our engineers, designers, planners, and clients, VHB strives to preserve and protect our shared cultural heritage across more than 30 offices along the East Coast.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in conducting below and above ground cultural resource identification and evaluation surveys for public and private sector clients
  • Write technical reports which assess historical and precontact archaeological site significance and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility
  • Assist in research and writing for NRHP nominations and State and National Register eligibility determinations
  • Conduct archival and background research for scoping and completing environmental documents
  • Support other VHB departments and regional offices with archaeological and historic preservation planning, site history research, compliance with Vermont State regulations such as Act 250 and Section 248 of Title 30, as well as Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
  • Conduct archaeological and historic preservation project tasks such as data collection, fieldwork, research, and document preparation
  • Prepare figures using the ESRI suite of software
Skills and Attributes
  • Self-motivated with an attention to detail and the ability to think critically
  • Must be able to work independently and as a part of project teams
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in digital photography is a plus
  • Knowledge of American history and Northeastern American archaeology; knowledge of architectural styles, and periods of development is a plus
  • Ability to use hardware, software, and data collection technologies
  • Familiarity working with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents
Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field required; focus on Historical Archaeology or historic period site formation processes in New England preferred
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology
  • 5+ years of professional experience in cultural resource management required; 7-10 years preferred
  • Ability to conduct archaeology work in Vermont consistent with the current guidelines required; and in additional New England states preferred
  • The ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, in inclement weather or rugged terrain
  • Valid driver’s license
