General Summary of Position:

This position will focus on developing and providing supportive services to our student-athlete population. The person in this position will provide confidential direct clinical services in a dedicated office within the Costello Athletic Center. This person is expected to provide psychoeducational programming and indirect clinical services, to consult with and work collaboratively with the Athletics Department and to develop systems and programs designed to serve UMass Lowell student-athletes and teams. This person will have a non-clinical supervisor within the Athletics Department’s Healthcare Office but they will be an employee of the University Wellness Center, will be supervised by the Director of Counseling Services in the Wellness Center and will operate under the same confidentiality rules that apply to all Counseling Services staff members. In order to best meet the needs of the student-athlete population, this position is expected to routinely include work outside of the Wellness Center hours of operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide culturally competent counseling services including triage screenings, intake assessments, brief individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis intervention to student athletes.
  • Provide team support and performance consultations.
  • Provide workshops and programming to student athletes on mental health topics including but not limited to interpersonal relationships, substance use, emotional distress, assertiveness, stress management, self-esteem, identity concerns, and anxiety.
  • Develop initiatives to increase awareness of mental health concerns and reduce stigma associated with help-seeking amongst student athletes.
  • Provide programming and consultation to coaches, administrators and staff members regarding student-athlete mental health, athletic performance and overall individual and team needs.
  • Develop initiatives to increase awareness of mental health concerns and reduce stigma associated with encouraging help-seeking amongst coaches, administrators and staff.
  • Collaborate and build effective partnerships with Healthcare, Sports Performance, Academic Services, Nutrition, and other athletic and university departments and administrators to provide a network of supportive services to student athletes.
  • Maintain clinical documentation using electronic medical records software and client confidentiality in accordance with Massachusetts law and professional ethical principles.
  • Adhere to all state and federal laws and professional ethical guidelines related to the practice of mental health.
  • Maintain appropriate professional licensure.
  • Follow professional standards of care, best practices, multicultural competent practices, and engage in ethical decision making.
  • Participate on site in weekly clinical supervision meetings with Director of Counseling Services, Case Consultation meetings and Training Seminars with Counseling Services staff.
  • Design and present training seminars to Counseling Services staff and trainees on areas related to sports psychology.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Will need to be available for work requirements in the evenings and weekends as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s degree or doctoral degree in clinical social work, counseling, psychology or a closely related field
  • Current license to practice in relevant clinical/counseling or social work field in U.S. If unlicensed in Massachusetts, ability to obtain MA licensure within 4 months of hire
  • 2 years of clinical experience within a college or university setting or with college aged students in an alternative setting
  • Experience in providing services such as counseling, outreach, or consultation with student-athletes
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to provide multiculturally competent clinical services to a diverse population

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong crisis intervention skills
  • Formal education, training, or supervised experience working with student athletes
  • Effective communication, interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills, written communication skills, and organizational skills
