Assistant Production Manager
Job description
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Plans, supervises and coordinates activities of production and related departments in order to facilitate production of steel components and products, according to design specifications and customer and company quality standards, in the most economical, safe and efficient manner possible. Directs functions in these departments in support of AST goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Plans, organizes, directs and controls the work of the departments in accordance with guidelines and schedules set by the Production Manager.
- Identifies the needs and develops a plan for training for the production supervisors and employees.
- Reviews posted daily, weekly and monthly goals; spots potential problems and assists in formulating counter-measures and solutions.
- Conducts personnel matters, such as counseling, performance reviews, discipline, according to company guidelines.
- Maintains total awareness of AST and plant policies, regulations, and procedures and ensures proper adherence to them within the assigned areas of responsibility.
- Provides instructions, guidance, training and directions to assist subordinates with difficulties and procedural problems.
- Develops, trains and motivates employees through subordinates to acquire maximum efficiency, productivity, cooperation and morale.
- Maintains close surveillance over departmental operations to ensure proper work schedules and material flow; proper use of manpower skills, equipment and facilities; proper application of methods and related matters
- Coordinates and participates in general administrative technical programs such as cost reduction, methods, communications, ISO 9000, safety and housekeeping and employee training.
- Reviews machine downtime records and initiates corrective action procedures to address causes.
- Participates, plans and coordinates manpower planning and budgets, both short and long term, providing cost and cost estimates for use in preparations of budgets.
- Collects, records and analyzes data on production, quality, scrap, rework, machine downtime, direct and indirect labor.
- Investigates accidents, makes reports and corrective action recommendations.
- Interviews and participates in the hiring process.
- Participates in daily production meetings and other plant meetings as required.
- Performs all duties following established safety procedures and guidelines using assigned safety equipment.
- Performs other duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
- Works under specific direction of the plant manager where definite objectives or goals are established.
- Plans and arranges own work and coordinates work with others, referring unusual cases to supervisor as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCURACY:
- Must maintain high volume production of parts manufactured to specified level of quality.
- Inaccurate data on which decisions are based would result in errors which could range from minor to major.
- Customer satisfaction and company revenues could be impacted if shipping errors were not detected.
- There is interaction and correlation with other functions which would enhance accuracy.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS:
- Interacts frequently with coworkers and other members of management and staff.
- Has outside contact with suppliers, vendors and customers.
- Nature of contacts requires a high degree of professionalism, tact and courtesy to maintain positive relations and customer satisfaction.
CONFIDENTIAL DATA:
- Has access to personnel files, product drawings, trade secrets, new product development, management discussions and financial information which should be maintained in confidence to avoid damage to the company.
MENTAL/VISUAL/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Close concentration to detail and mental activity are required while planning, evaluating situations, preparing reports and coordinating operations.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity are required.
- Job duties require extensive walking, standing, reaching, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling and good eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. repetitively. Must be able to talk and hear.
ENVIRONMENT:
- Works in a normal steel fabrication environment with intermittent contact with machine noise and factory working conditions.
- Required to wear safety equipment including: hard hat, ear, eye, and foot protection.
EXTENT OF SUPERVISION:
- Has total operational responsibility for providing product lines at consistent cost, quality and efficiency.
- Manages budgets and personnel.
- Maintains an effective organization through motivation, coaching, training, hiring, evaluating and disciplining employees.
SCOPE OF SUPERVISION:
- Supervises production supervisors as direct reports and employees as indirect reports.
- The number of subordinates will vary with each department/area and shift.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- BS or BA in related field or equivalent in education and work experience with progressively responsible work experience in a manufacturing facility would be required to prepare for the position.
- Up to one year in the position would be necessary to become proficient in most phases of the job.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
- Must have a thorough knowledge of the production operations, procedures, products, terminology, quality standards and equipment.
- Requires understanding of Department of Transportation regulations.
- Requires the ability to plan, develop and coordinate programs to produce an optimum quality product in the most cost effectively and efficient manner possible.
- Must have technical knowledge required to provide guidance and assistance to the total production operation.
- Must have management and administrative skills.
- Requires good written and verbal communication skills and good human relations skills.
- Must be knowledgeable of budgets, inventory, costing, scheduling, customer service, etc. Requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches. Requires the ability to maintain specified records, files and logs and compile data to generate documents and reports. Requires good computer skills and an understanding of OSHA requirements and safety policies.
COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES:
- Must plan, direct and coordinate the full scope of manufacturing operations within the plant. Problem solving, judgment, initiative, analytical and evaluation skills are required.
- Must proactively work with varied situations concurrently requiring a wide range of responses.
