Position Description

The Department of Chemistry at San José State University invites applications for two tenure track positions in chemistry. Excellence in research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. The candidate will be teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. Flexibility to teach in more than one sub-discipline of chemistry is desirable. The candidate must be able to adapt their teaching methods to a variety of learning environments, including online instruction. The successful candidate will develop a robust research program engaging undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, chemical education or equivalent doctoral work.
• Research experience in one of the subdisciplines of chemistry.
• Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
  
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching in one of the subdisciplines of chemistry. We strongly encourage applicants with a desire to teach in biochemistry, organic, analytical or inorganic chemistry, including general chemistry.
• Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate research students.
• Experience adapting teaching methods to a variety of learning environments, including online instruction

Key Responsibilities

• The candidate will teach courses, including laboratory courses, graduate courses and service courses as needed by the department.
• The candidate must develop a research program that incorporates undergraduate and MS students
• The candidate must submit grant proposals and manuscripts to peer reviewed research journals.
• The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually by working in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments such as advising, assessment and lab coordination.
• The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, some faculty duties may lead to designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to complete Clery Act training and to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution.

Conditional Offer

The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
