Job Summary
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Communication Studies beginning mid- September 2023.

The program’s applied focus requires applicants with significant industry experience and applied knowledge of digital communication and public relations, social media strategy, data analytics, leadership and/or organizational communication.
The successful candidate will have a variety of teaching responsibilities with a primary responsibility to teach courses in the areas of social media and public relations. In addition, the candidate should also be prepared to teach in one or more of the following areas: research methods, gender, race and media, organizational communication and leadership, health communication. The candidate should be ready to teach face-to-face and online course offerings. Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.
The faculty member hired for this position will be welcomed into an academic community dedicated to cultural diversity, community engagement, and social justice.

Required Qualifications
  • A doctorate in Communication Studies or related field.
  • Teach courses in the areas of social media and public relations.
  • At least one year of college teaching experience; this includes candidates who offer this experience as a graduate student with instructor of record responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference may be granted to candidates who can teach courses on research methods, gender, race and media, organizational communication and leadership;
  • Preference may be granted to candidates who are bilingual;
  • Preference may be granted to candidates who have worked with first generation students and under-represented groups.
  • Consideration may also be given to candidates who can extend our offerings to additional areas relevant to our university, community and/or region.
  • Industry experience in social media.

Teaching Responsibility
A Faculty Activity Plan will be developed by the end of the first quarter of the selected candidate’s appointment, and will consist of a combination of teaching, research, service and/or release time to perform administrative duties, as negotiated and as needed to meet the business needs of the department.
Typical workload for this position will involve 36 credits per academic year, subject to Department needs, mainly at EWU’s main campus in Cheney, WA.

80% Teaching Responsibilities
  • The candidate should be prepared to teach courses in the areas of social media and public relations. In addition, the candidate should also be prepared to teach in one or more of the following areas: research methods, gender, race and media, organizational communication and leadership, health communication.
  • May be required to teach other courses that fulfill the need of the Department and Program.
  • Advising undergraduates.
  • All faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and in assessment of student learning outcomes.


Teaching also includes the following additional related responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:
  • Meet all scheduled classes
  • Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
  • Schedule and attend office hours
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines
  • Advise students who are declared majors on department, college and University requirements and career opportunities.

20% Scholarship & Service (Typically 10% each)
  • This position will be expected to engage in research and scholarship.
  • This position will be expected to engage in service through department, college, university, and community/civic organizations, including service on committees.
