Senior Associate Dean for Research – USC School of Medicine Columbia

The Senior Associate Dean for Research at the USC School of Medicine Columbia (SOMC) is the senior leader of the research enterprise within SOMC. This individual is responsible for working with other SOMC and USC leaders, faculty, and staff to create a vision for research excellence and develop strategic plans and tactics which will turn that vision into reality. This leader will assist in identifying prime opportunities for research excellence and growth and allocate resources to promote successful research activities.
The Senior Associate Dean for Research also contributes to the educational mission by contributing to the expansion and optimization of research opportunities for SOM graduate students, medical students, post-doctoral fellows, and PH-USC residents and fellows.
The Senior Associate Dean reports directly to and is responsible to the Dean, SOMC. Those reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Research include the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education, Directors of SOM research centers and institutes, and the Directors of the SOM Instrument Resource Facility and the SOM Animal Resource Facility.

Important collaborative relationships of the SOMC Senior Associate Dean include:
  • SOM Basic Science Department Chairs and their faculty
  • Chair of the Department of Translational and Clinical Science (soon to be formed)
  • Vice President for Research at USC
  • Leaders (Deans and Associate Deans for Research) of other USC colleges and schools
  • Leaders of the Columbia VA Medical Center, including the VA Medical Center Director and the Associate Chief of Staff for Research
  • Prisma Health academic leaders (chief Clinical Officer and Chief Academic Executive Officer) and the Prisma Health Midlands Medical Group Chief Medical Officer.
  • Director of the SOMC Biomedical Science program.
  • Educational leaders, including the SOMC UME and GME education deans.
  • Assistant Dean for Clinical Graduate Programs


Duties, responsibilities and expectations:
  • Leads the basic science, clinical and translational research programs at USC SOMC
  • Carries out the directives and/or guidelines established by the Dean, SOMC for operational and financial matters.
  • Advocates for SOMC research opportunities and resources at USC, state and national levels
  • Contributes to a collaborative research environment within USC through regular interaction with leaders and researchers within other USC colleges and schools, including the USC SOM Greenville, the Arnold School of Public Health, the College of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Social Work, the College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Arts and Sciences, and others.
  • Collaborates with Prisma Health, the Columbia VA Medical Center, and other clinical partners to develop strategies to enhance medical research with our health system partners.
  • Contributes to a collaborative environment for clinical, translational, and basic science research conducted jointly with the Columbia VA medical Center through fostering relationships and joint planning.
  • Respects and adheres to organizational structure and chain of command of the SOMC and the University
  • Actively manages the human resources for the applicable research operations including mentoring and/or managing faculty and staff.
  • Serves as a resource for faculty and collaborating organizations seeking to develop strategic research initiatives and respond to emerging opportunities.
  • Works with the SOMC and USC Development team to promote philanthropic support for research programs and facilities. Builds relationships with local, national and international foundations to facilitate communication and interaction with research funding organizations and opportunities.
  • Cultivates research partnerships with other University units and academic and nonacademic research entities outside of the University and School.
  • Promotes and publicizes research success at the SOMC

Required Education and Experience
  • A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, and/or PhD degree.
  • Experience and qualifications to be eligible to be appointed to the academic rank of professor with tenure.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the importance of clinical, translational, and basic science research in a medical school and flagship university environment.
  • An accomplished history of direct involvement in medical research (may be clinical, translational, and/or biomedical science research).
  • A record of publishing high impact contributions to the biomedical/scientific literature.
  • Proven success in applying for and securing sustainable grant funding, including federal research funding.
  • A history of successful research mentoring of students, post-doctoral fellows, and/or junior faculty.
  • A demonstrated track record of collaboration, with a strong commitment to building a culture of inclusive excellence.
  • A history of successful leadership, including leadership of day-to-day research and/or clinical operations (e.g., leadership of a department, division, or a laboratory team).
  • Experience in planning strategic initiatives.
  • Excellence in writing and speaking skills.
  • History of success in faculty recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in fiscal management.
  • Demonstrated ability to employ sound business practices and to use resources wisely.
  • Familiarity with structures and functions of large universities and academic medical centers.
