Brief Summary of Job Duties
Serves as a member of a team of staff and students to advocate for women and gender minorities and to envision, create, and deliver feminist educational programming and resources to the campus community. Must be aware of gender-based issues and inequalities, as well as oppression experienced by marginalized communities including People of Color, student parents, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Serves as a topic expert, and stays abreast of current issues affecting women, gender minorities, and feminist perspectives. Uses knowledge of current and historical issues to inform departmental decision making. Supports Director in developing and planning educational programs and community-building events. Assumes primary responsibility for Women's Center spaces. Supervises up to 10 students. Mentors students in their work for equity, inclusion, and social justice. Should be able to serve as a liaison to the academic community, student users of the Women's Center and the Non-Traditional Student Resource Center, and other Student Affairs Departments. Coordinates the WGSE Volunteer Program and the Women in STEM Mentorship Program. The Associate Director reports directly to and acts in the absence of the WGSE Director.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Feminist Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, or related field.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of gender-based issues, inequalities, and feminist perspectives.
  • Experience providing presentations or facilitating educational workshops.
  • Demonstrated experience working with, advising, and/or supporting students in a higher education context.
  • Ability to manage priorities under the pressure of deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Feminist Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, or related field.
  • Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures.
  • Experience serving as the primary supervisor of part-time staff.
  • Experience navigating a large organization.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties
  • 30% Student Support and Advocacy
Assumes primary responsibility for student-focused services and resources including pad and tampon distribution, wellness vending machine, and the feminist resource library. - Assumes primary oversight of the Department's physical spaces, which includes interacting with and supporting students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who access the space, identifying needs and areas of growth, making recommendations to better serve the campus population. -Understands campus resources and creates relationships in order to advise and refer students and colleagues on concerns such as food security, financial insecurity, and health and wellbeing. -Partners with colleagues across campus to expand resources for women and gender minorities. -Facilitates the creation and maintenance of a positive, student-centered community.
  • 25% Supervision
Provides leadership, direction, and supervision for up to 10 student staff members in the design and implementation of support services. - Coordinates the students who staff the front desk. -Assists in the coordination and oversight of the department's recruitment, selection, and training of new student staff. -Provides ongoing mentorship, coaching, and leadership development to student staff to develop their capacity as peer educators and maintain staff expectations and responsibilities.

  • 15% Public Information and Outreach
Assumes primary responsibility for the Women's Center published calendar. - Collaborates and provides content for the development of printed materials, social media posts, and electronic newsletters. -Oversees the development and maintenance of the Women's Center and Non-Traditional Student Resource Center websites. -Cultivates and sustains ongoing collaborative relationships with a wide array of staff, faculty, students, community members, and with campus and community organizations in order to accomplish goals. -Collects and disseminates accurate information regarding women's and gender-based issues and resources to the campus and Santa Barbara community. -Represents the department and the University at outreach events.

  • 15% Educational Programming
In collaboration with the Department, campus, and community stakeholders, develops and implements educational, social, and cultural programs and events for women, gender minorities, and allied populations in the university community aimed at enhancing an understanding of diversity and intersectionality and fostering a culture of equity and inclusion. -Researches current issues, needs, state of inequalities to advise and support departmental programming. -Establishes programming goals and assesses activities to determine effectiveness and student learning outcomes. -Works with director on large-scale programs and initiatives such as the Scholar-in-Residence program. -Recruits and coordinates students in the WGSE Volunteer program. -Coordinates the Women in STEM Mentorship Program in collaboration with the graduate student organization Women in Science, Engineering, and Math.

  • 15% Management
In absence of Director, uses independent judgment to resolve problem or crisis situations that arise, represents the department to the campus community, provides leadership, and offers decision making authority. -Develops and implements policies and procedures for operations of the Center and program delivery. -Liaise with other departments within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs and maintains on-going cooperative and consultative relations. -Advises director on long-range planning, goal setting, policy development, budget decisions and student personnel actions. -Supports the functioning of WGSE by completing special assignments as required
