The Associate Patent Analyst will be responsible for conducting patentability searches requested by ELC’s technology innovators and scientists, and prepare search reports to support patentability determinations as directed. The Associate Patent Analyst will review, maintain, and regularly updates to ELC’s internal patent database, and assist R&D teams with internal patent related portfolio searches/reports as needed. The Associate Patent Analyst will support the preparation of competitive patent reports by conducting specified patents searches and overseeing partnerships for external search projects.

  • Learns the basic fundamentals of raw materials, cosmetic formulation, and the technical development of new products.
  • Learns the process of IP development from new invention submissions through patent search support.
  • Become competent in standard IP legal processes and regulations.
  • Conducts patentability searches, as directed by the Senior IP Analyst and ELC R&D teams, with the completion of formal patentability reports.
  • Curates ELC’s internal patent portfolio, by updating, maintaining, and improving an IP asset database, with an emphasis on supporting a patent-to-product mapping process and infrastructure.
  • Performs competitive patent searches, and produces a report, summarizing new activity in key categories.
  • Keeps Senior IP Analyst informed of project progress and deliver feedback within indicated time frames.
  • Facilitates Intellectual Property training to R&D teams.
  • Prepares reports for IP Strategy metrics in given time frame in ways that meet objectives.
  • Attention to detail in accurately evaluating and recording patent data.
  • Stays abreast of developments in cosmetic and IP fields and continues to demonstrate performance improvement.

Qualifications


Bachelor of Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or related field


  • 2 years Intellectual property experience in patent examination/analysis and searching advanced technical and patent databases such as Questel Orbit, PatBase, Thompson Innovation, NexisLexis. Can include work as a paralegal or similar position.

Qualified candidates may have experience working in IP search firms, U.S. patent examiners working in chemistry, biology, and chemical engineering art units. Strong technical writing skills; specifically in analysis and reporting on the novelty or nonobvious of disclosed inventions in view of the prior art

Fluency in Japanese, Korean, or Chinese a plus.


The anticipated base salary range for this position is $59,500 to $89,000. Exact salary depends on several factors such as experience, skills, education, and budget. Salary range may vary based on geographic location. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for participation in a highly competitive bonus program with possibility for overachievement based on performance and company results.
