About the Department
The North Carolina State University’s Radiation Safety Division ensures campus-wide compliance with the University, State and Federal rules and regulations associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices in academic and research endeavors. The University’s Radiation Safety responsibilities encompass the College of Veterinary Medicine and a teaching nuclear reactor, as well as several off-campus extension locations.
Essential Job Duties
- Manage Diagnostic Radiation Producing Device programs-Student Health
- Manage Electron Microscope Program
- Manage CVM Radiation Producing device programs
- Manage CVM Nuclear Medicine/Cat Iodine Clinic programs
- Manage Surplus programs related to radiation producing devices
- CVM X-ray program oversight, programmatic coordination of training, dosimetry and services
- Emergency Response
- X-ray Training class development, delivery and revision (partner with EHP on analytical x-ray)
- Assist with EHS teams, University standing committees and outreach
- Provide key measurements data for assigned measures
- Maintain compliance with University, State and Federal regulations governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment.
Other Responsibilities
- Performs hazardous material inspections; participates in emergency response activities; assists with University committees (Radiation Safety and Reactor Safety)
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, related applied science, preferably Health Physics or Radiologic Science, and two years of related experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience working in a clinical environment (medical or veterinary)
- Experience with and applied knowledge of X-ray devices and radiation safety programs
- Must have working knowledge of regulatory expectations and processes
- Must possess strong math skills, research skills and presentation skills
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefer a Masters Degree in Radiologic Sciences, Health Physics, natural sciences or related applied science.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Radiologic Technologist Credential or equivalent training and experience with clinical competency
- Medical Physics or CHP certification a plus, but not required
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
