At Danone, Manufacturing the best products and supplying them to meet demand is a key driver for our plant teams. We are looking for an Automation Engineer in our So Delicious frozen ice cream manufacturing facility in Springfield, Oregon.
As a member of the Maintenance Department, and reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will provide controls and technical support to multiple areas of the manufacturing operation.

Key Accountabilities as the Automation Engineer:
- Trains, develops, and mentors employees on automation and controls knowledge/skills.
- Leads problem solving and troubleshooting efforts on equipment performance and downtime issues related to automation/controls systems.
- Makes recommendations for required automation/control system maintenance and needs for replacement/upgrade.
- Verifies maintenance employees are troubleshooting equipment issues properly related to automation/control systems.
- Position will have autonomous ability to make programming and control logic changes that affect the productivity of the plant, to recommend equipment, to enforce electrical and programming standards. It will work with downtime, losses, and operational efficiency.
- Possess expert knowledge of PLC’s, VFD’s, Servo’s and plant automation systems. Supporting and troubleshooting all industrial control systems including OEM “original equipment manufacturer control systems”, process control systems, data collection systems, VFD’s, Servos, HMI’s, and control networks.
- Design, create and adapt operator interface screens.
- Commissioning control systems, troubleshooting operational issues, perform equipment and process instrumentation calibration including flow transmitters, pressure transmitters, level sensors, etc. Troubleshoot and commissioning variable frequency drives, servo systems, and industrial networks including Control net, Device net, and Ethernet.
- Review and approve/reject Preventative Maintenance (PM) and inspection deferrals as required per site procedure.
- Ensures operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing maintenance requirements (both planned and unplanned) on production, packaging, and processing equipment (optimizing uptime and minimizing downtime) and utility systems (to provide continuous supply of heat, steam, cooling, electric power, gas, or air required for operations) and following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications.
- Develops enhancements and improvements of industrial control schemes to drive operational improvements and cost reductions.
- Complies with the following initiatives: Reliability Strategy, Daily Management System (DMS), Food Safety/Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Refrigeration System (CO2/NH4) Support, Behavior-Based Safety, and Danone/OSHA Standards, including LOTO, Electrical Safety/Arc Flash, Machine Guarding, and others.
- Provides related technical guidance and expertise, assisting and coaching Maintenance, Operations and QA associates on an ongoing basis.
- Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. Closes out work orders in MVP CMMS, writing technical summaries, detailing work performed for record keeping.
- Maintaining controls related documentation (OEM manuals - electrical drawings - P&ID drawings - files, programs and parameters for control networks, drives, PLC’s, and process databases).
About You:
- You have a High School Diploma or GED with at least 2 years experience with applied industrial controls using Allen Bradley control platforms (SLC500, ControlLogix, MicroLogix, PanelView Plus, RS Logix, RS View ME, etc.), Motor Controls (Servo and VFD), required.
- A Bachelors or Associates degree in electronics or associated field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered!
- You have expert knowledge of PLC’s, VFD’s, Servo’s and plant automation systems.
- You have working knowledge of all automation standard practices as defined by the ISA.
- You have working knowledge of National, State, Local building codes, OSHA, and standard industry safety rules/regulations.
- Preferably, you have capital project management support, general electrical, and instrument calibration experience.
- Preferably, you are multi-craft/multi-skilled and have experience with electrical, electrical controls, mechanical, pneumatics, hydraulics and/or fabrication.
- You have decision making and problem-solving abilities.
