Logan Aluminum is seeking an experienced Level 2 automation systems engineer for its world-class Russellville, KY aluminum rolling facility.

This position is responsible for development and implementation of process control and data management systems on multiple system platforms at Logan’s cold rolling mills.

Position could involve project work, as well as software design, development, and day-to-day system maintenance activities.

Essential accountabilities:

  • Provide direction in design, development, implementation, and procurement activities associated with computer, automation, and other electronic control equipment.
  • Provide engineering systems direction for both people and the cold rolling process to support the Logan concept and organizational philosophy.
  • During project phases, coordinate flow of engineering between vendors and engineering contractors. Some travel may be required.
  • Coordinate with Logan I/S (Level 3; information services), operations, and other engineering disciplines in order to develop and support new automation solutions within the cold rolling business unit.
  • Develops and maintains process control and automation software necessary for proper automated operation of the machine centers. Must be able to develop new applications as well as modify existing software of varying complexity.
  • Works closely with production and process personnel in troubleshooting situations.

Experience with any of the following is helpful and should be highlighted:

  • Management of small to medium size capital projects and use of project management skills and software tools.
  • Administration of databases such as Oracle and SQL Server. Knowledge of Oracle’s SQL Developer software is a plus.
  • System administration for Windows servers and work stations
  • System administration for HP OpenVMS systems
  • Design, development, maintenance, modification of various software programs that interface to, or affect –
  • X-ray thickness gauges
  • Flatness control systems
  • HMI systems (human machine interface)
  • PLCs (programmable logic controllers)
  • Ethernet networks & TCP/IP
  • High level language and/or object oriented programming experience.
  • Software development and maintenance, utilizing various software/programming languages and environments, including:
  • Visual Studio
  • C / C++ / C#
  • Java
  • Fortran
  • iFIX HMI and VBA scripting
  • Oracle PL/SQL
  • HP’s OpenVMS operating system
  • Microsoft Windows; server, workstation, and terminal server (thin client environments)

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong process automations aptitude is needed
  • Must be able to develop on, monitor and maintain automation systems in the business unit. Various hardware & software platforms are part of the level 2 automation realm
  • 50% of influence is based on knowledge and expertise while 50% is based on interpersonal skills. Good communication skills (written and verbal) are invaluable.
  • Must think independently and have a curious nature.
  • Problem solving is difficult -- but paramount -- in the area of troubleshooting reliability issues within the automated systems. Team communication is required for systems issues as well as the ability to adapt to change.
  • Procedural control is limited to the agreement of engineers, teams, and Unit Manager. This position’s control affects the ability of the equipment to meet production standards and goals.
  • Must have good documentation skills. All software changes must be clearly documented.

Qualifications & requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or other 4-year technical degree is required. Degree in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
  • Must have minimum of 4 years’ experience working with computer control systems in an automated industrial or manufacturing environment, preferably in the metals industry.

Compensation:

$80,000 - $100,000 depending on experience
