Project Overview:

NOAA Office of Coast Survey builds the national bathymetry to support a mandate for navigational products as well as other NOAA priorities, such as the New Blue Economy. To streamline the bathymetry data pipeline and update to data riven processes, SFI is looking for a candidate with software development capability to apply hydrographic science business logic throughout the software development life cycle within its Hydrographic Systems and Technology Branch.

Primary Responsibilities:

The scientist will work within a team lo develop and apply new technology and methods to increase the capabilities, efficiencies, and accuracy of the current data model and workflow for the National Bathymetric. Source project within the Office of Coast Survey. The scientist will be involved with all phases of automated workflow development, including design, algorithm and software development, testing and documentation. Some work will be performed in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The scientist will be working with different data formats, databases, and workflows that require significant software development.

Required Skills

• BS in hydrography, ocean mapping, physical science, marine science, oceanography, computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, related discipline, or equivalent.
• 5-7 years of experience with data analysis and an understanding of GIS and data management techniques.
• Demonstrated drive to solve problems and think creatively and critically.
• Knowledge and experience with software development, including Python, Integrated Development Environments, debugging principles, continuous integration testing, and automated documentation.
• Knowledge and experience with databases and queries in PostgreSQL.
• Knowledge and experience with geospatial applications, such as QGIS, libraries, such as GDAL, and OGC web services.
• Knowledge and experience with horizontal and vertical datums as well as transformations in the context of point and raster data.
• Knowledge and experience with version control best practices and experience with version control software such as Git.
• Experience developing mapping standards and techniques, and improving data management and access.
• Knowledge and experience with container-based software development and deployment platforms
• Good written and oral communication skills

• In order to meet the clearance requirements for this opportunity, candidates must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder.
• Ability to pass a US Public Trust background investigation for access to the client site and computing systems. You must have lived in the US for the past three (3) years.

Other Information:

• The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $75,000.
