POSITION SUMMARY:
The Barista is responsible for promoting coffee and tea consumption by educating customers, as well as preparing and serving a variety of coffee and tea drinks, along with a selection of food items and general merchandise. The Barista will promote inclusion of persons with disabilities and work in conjunction with fellow employees.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Greet customers when they come in the door.
  • Assist customers in making product selections based upon their preferences and interests; educate customers on the various drink and food menu selections. Paying attention to details such as coffee blend, dairy and sugar ratios is crucial to the customer experience and satisfaction.
  • Complete preparations for and serve drink and food items by following prescribed café recipes in the preparation of drinks and foods.
  • Receive and process payments (cash and credit cards).
  • Stock supplies, wash dishes, bus tables, and clean equipment and the entire café per set procedures.
  • Follow all rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of the café, including completion of any Illinois Department of Health training and certifications required.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have good communication and listening skills to meet the customer and employee needs
  • Must be able to focus on the customer’s preferences and interests; providing an engaging and interesting customer experience
  • Must be able to organize and optimize small areas for efficiency and quality

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must be 16 years of age or older. Barista experience preferred.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to communicate well with customers and employees.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Must be able to add, subtract, multiple and divide. Must be able to count and complete transactions with monies.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must maintain all credentials required by the Illinois Department of Health.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability or willingness to learn tablet/computer operations for entering and tracking Café transactions.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, ascend or descend steps, and sit. The employee occasionally is required to bend stoop, squat, crawl, climb-height, reach above shoulder level, crouch, kneel, balance and push/pull. The employee continuously is required to lift up to 10 lbs. The employee occasionally is required to lift between 11 lbs – 50 lbs. The job requires the employee to use the left and right hand for repetitive actions for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulating. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
