TITLE: BEHAVIORAL INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE, SPECIAL EDUCATION

JOB GOAL:

The Behavioral Instructional Aide, under general supervision, assists a teacher in providing instruction to behaviorally challenged individuals or small groups of students; monitors, redirects and modifies student progress regarding inappropriate behaviors and performance; and performs a variety of classroom support and clerical duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist with instruction and tutoring of behaviorally challenged students or small groups of students and reinforce or follow-up on the teacher’s lessons.

2. Provide support to therapists and specialists by implementing visual, behavioral, social, and/or communication strategies that enhance student performance and behavior. Facilitate social skills training programs.

3. Assist in analyzing and evaluating the behavioral, academic and socialization needs of students by gathering, compiling and preparing data for reports and keeping anecdotal records and daily logs a requested.

4. Provide input to therapists, specialists, and teachers on student performance, progress, and behavior. Alert teacher and resource staff to any special problems or information concerning students. Assist in developing and evaluating individual and group educational goals and objectives as appropriate.

5. Exercise constant supervision of students. Uses appropriate discipline in accordance with grade level, student ability to understand discipline and approved procedures. Use approved techniques for responding to students whose behavior may escalate to self-injurious or physically aggressive acts, including spitting, pinching, biting, hair-pulling, kicking and hitting. Develop and use incentives as positive reinforcement. Reinforce behavior modification techniques determined by the Behavior Interventionist, teacher or other resource professionals.

6. Assist in maintaining order among students in the classroom and school grounds. Assure safety of students following health and safety rules. Assist and supervise individual and groups of student in moving from place to place in an orderly manner (i.e. school bus to classroom, classroom to restroom, cafeteria, on playgrounds, on field trips and co-curricular activities).

7. Encourage students and help maintain a supportive learning environment.

8. Assist students with assigned special projects.

9. Assist teacher with implementation of Individual Educational Plans (I.E.P.s) and may assist in administering a variety of tests and evaluative exercises.

10. May be required to attend in-service training programs and workshops, Parent Information nights, and other activities.

11. Perform specialized health care procedures which may include catheterization, tube feeding, and other tasks related to the student’s physical needs. (Training will be provided.)

12. Assist student in personal hygiene needs, which may include dressing and/or toileting.

13. May be required to assist students in boarding and/or riding buses.

14. May be required to help oversee students' lunch programs, recesses, or physical education activities.

15. May be required to assist with the maintenance and adjustment of equipment.

16. May be required to assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for students and staff.

17. Respect the confidential nature of pupil records and school reports.

18. Observe and report unusual or atypical student behavior to the teacher.

19. May be required to attend parent conferences and/or make parent contacts.

20. Possess or be eligible to obtain a valid driver’s license and automobile.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduation from high school or equivalent.

2. Complete two years of higher education study (48 units) or obtain an AA degree or

3. higher or pass a formal District academic assessment test.

4. Current First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate Required.

5. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred.

6. One year of experience working with students with autism including some demonstrated experience implementing Applied Behavioral Analysis programs.

7. Knowledge of:

· Basic techniques and methods for effective instruction of students

· Special characteristics related to the instruction of students with special needs

· Knowledge of behavior intervention techniques

· Typing, filing and other general clerical skills.

· Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

8. Ability to:

· Project a mature, constructive, stable, and positive attitude in a learning environment

· Learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without close and immediate supervision.

· Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of child growth and development, including students with medical needs

· Execute oral and written directions and follow through, as needed

· Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with others

· Lift up to 45 lbs.

REPORTS TO AND EVALUATED BY: Coordinator of Special Education, Principal or designee

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule and Classified Work Year Calendar.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
