LISTO Family Literacy Program

Part-Time (Afternoon/Evening) – 10 hours per week

The LISTO Family Literacy Program provides Spanish speaking families with educational support as emerging English language learners and in their native language. This includes support for infants and toddlers, pre-school aged children, homework support for grades K-8, and adult ESL, GED and adult basic education classes through INEA. For the 2022-2023 Academic Year, LISTO will operate on a hybrid model (instruction both online and onsite in Jackson County locations to be determined). The f unding is separate from Head Start and Early Head Start and has a wage scale/bonus structure that is also separate from the majority of agency programming. The Listo Family Literacy program does follow the performance standards and Agency policies and procedures for Southern Oregon Head Start.


PURPOSE: The LISTO ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor provides an English language experience to enhance self-esteem and promotes English language development to adult students. ESL classes provide Latino parents/adults with the opportunity to learn English and additional skills to enhance their family and economic empowerment. The LISTO ESL Instructor supports this process by providing assessments and by engaging each student in class (virtual or on-site) in a safe and welcoming environment where all LISTO ESL students thrive and succeed in their educational goals. The ESL Instructor is responsible for meeting LISTO Program performance standards and following the agency policies and procedures.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

I. STUDENT EDUCATION, CURRICULUM, AND CLASSROOM

A. CLASSROOM – Virtual and in-person (Hybrid with in-person sessions in Jackson County, Oregon schools, preschools, etc. – To be determined).

B. Assess participants for appropriate placement, pre and post evaluation, progress report and end of year report.

C. Plan and deliver ESL lessons and study groups online utilizing Zoom (specific training provided).

· Online platforms – specific training will be provided;

· Provided ESL curriculum (Cambridge University Press Ventures curriculum);

· Classroom activities and discussions;

· Homework and computer assignments.

D. Participate in planning meetings and work as a member of the LISTO team to develop family-based curriculum and activities.

E. Apply for all students the principles of diversity, equity and racial justice. Applies to the extent possible, principles of least restrictive environment for adults with disabilities.

F. Keep attendance records and progress reports up to date.

G. Be responsible for organization, packing and transport of LISTO classroom materials – when in-person activities occur.

H. Be responsible for set-up and clean-up of classroom – when in-person activities occur.


II. COMMUNICATION AND DEBRIEFINGS

A. Attend staff meetings (remotely and in-person when necessary and safe), trainings (online or in-person), workshops and actively seek to maintain and increase competencies.

B. Facilitate and model respectful, professional communication and teamwork.

C. Facilitate open communication and promote group problem solving.

D. Promote LISTO and Head Start to children, families, co-workers and the community.


III. SUPERVISION

A. Provide supervision to any classroom assistant/volunteers you may work with directly.

B. Arrange for substitutes when necessary.


IV. INTERACTION WITH CHILDREN, PARENTS, AND CO-WORKERS

A. M ust relate in a positive, nurturing way, both verbally and physically, and be sensitive to the needs of children, parents and co-workers who may or may not share your cultural background.

B. Use quick, safe reactions/responses in dealing with children or situations that involve children.


V. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY

A. Create a safe environment where all students are supported, respected and inspired to learn.

B. Maintain a safe and pleasant work environment at all times.

C. Actively contribute toward promoting a safe workplace/environment following safety regulations, policies and procedures.

REQUIRED JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent educational level required. AAS required; BA or higher in Education or related field preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered to fill this position. Willingness to engage in professional growth, as available to the position and as requested by the supervisor required.


Certification or Accreditation: TESOL certification preferred.


Experience: Documented experience mentoring, coaching, and leading adults required. One year documented teaching experience ESL or Adult Basic Education/GED prep preferred.


Essential Skills: Fluency in English language required. High level of English literacy, both reading and writing, required. Some Spanish language ability strongly preferred. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written, communication skills and computer proficiency required. Ability to complete assignments in a timely, accurate, and manner. To be successful in a remote teaching environment, candidates must be computer literate; have experience using the internet for research, be proficient in using e-mail (attaching documents, sending links, etc.), and be comfortable and willing to learn new applications to deliver classes via the internet. Specific training will be provided.


An internet connection from where you will conduct class required. A laptop computer, if requested, and partial reimbursement for internet service will be provided for the duration of remote services.

Essential Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 40 pounds. Able to sit and stand at length.


Exposure to Hazards: Unpredictable child and family behavior, hazardous chemicals, contagious conditions, work with personal computer and other office equipment.


Working Conditions: For the 2021-22 Academic Year the position will be a hybrid of remote learning from your home/office and in-person learning at partner sites to be determined. At partner sites the environment will consist of preschool/public school classrooms, playgrounds and offices. Moderate local travel.


EMPLOYMENT CONTINGENT UPON:

Pre-employment drug screening, as required by Agency and position

Criminal history registry enrollment

Valid Oregon Driver License

Proof of current personal automobile insurance in accordance with agency policy

Three (3) years DMV court print driving record

Approval to drive from Agency insurance carrier – requires at least 21 years of age
