The Bonney Lake Food Bank is an innovative organization that explores the entire food system to solve access barriers, advocate for racial and food justice, promote health and wellness, and contribute to the region's economic development. Our food bank is customer-focused where dignity is paramount, and organizational decisions are driven by the customer experience about access, equity, and inclusion. Our organizational culture involves innovation that drives our daily work. We call our food bank “The Market” because it looks like a metropolitan market, is clean, organized, and inviting. It provides our clients with a choice model offering the best quality nutritional food. In addition to in person shopping, we offer delivery to those customers that are homebound, and grocery pickup at refrigerated smart lockers. We strive to provide fresh, nutritional, dietary, and culturally inclusive foods. Like many food banks and emergency food networks, the Bonney Lake Food Bank experienced an incredible client count (increase of 700%) and volume growth due to COVID-19This growth continued in 2022 as we served more than 210,000 people. In this position, Bonney Lake Food Bank partners with Harvest Against Hunger (HAH), a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable, community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges and management related to food supply chain, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and growing organizations through storytelling, development, and fundraising. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. HAH and the Harvest VISTA Program aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.
