Position Summary:
Develop and train best practices of aluminum MIG and TIG welding at NYM operations. Determine and document weld procedure specifications for all existing and new weld joints by perfroming both welding and joint destructive testing.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Perform individual joint testing throughout the department.
- Assist with new weld joint design and qualification through the use of hands-on welding, testing, and fixturing.
- Owner of all WPS documentation related to weld joint settings and characteristics.
- Investigate weld defects observed throughout the day and potentially test joints or weldments based upon audit findings and defects observed.
- Lead all new hire training for the department as it pertains to physical MIG and TIG welding as well as on-line weld class.
- Completes sign-off operators as qualified in MIG or TIG welding after completion of training process.
- Completes sign-off operators as qualified in a particular station: for process adherence, weld beads to the quality standard, ability to hit takt time, etc.
- Review and advise on if weld rework is acceptable for observed defects, and make recommendations for specific joint rework where applicable. *Would not actually perform the rework*
- Assists with machine maintenance such as WIP or component replacements.
- Completes and documents daily weld audits to review welder settings like volts, WFS, Amps, Arc distance, and visual weld inspection of the beads the settings produce.
- Completes and documents weld technique evaluations including torch angle, approach angle to workpiece, distance to workpiece, travel speed, weld settings used, correct weld length, appearance and bead size, straightness, undercut, craters, PPE usage.
- May assist with answering Andon lights if an issue with a joint or equipment is observed.
- Assists with machine set-up and maintenance as needed to support production.
- Work overtime as needed to complete daily tasks or projects
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Welding Certification from accredited college not required but preferred.
- Basic computer, math, reading and measurement proficiency.
- Knowledge of AWS standards and WPS documentation preferred.
- Must be able to read drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of 5S, Kaizen and LSS preferred.
- Ability to follow established safety processes to handle chemicals and equipment to weld aluminum.
- Ability to lead training of others.
- Detailed and organized.
- Self starter, team player with a good safety awareness.
Work Environment and Physical requirements:
- Regularly required to work at heights on platforms, lifting parts and pieces up to 50 lbs, traveling up and down stairs on a constant basis, sitting, squatting and bending in various awkward positions for certain lengths of time - including working overhead, traveling in and out of work areas, walking and being on your feet for a majority of the work day. Exposed to noise, dust, fumes and odors on a daily basis. Physical exertion is required. Requires standing, bending and twisting for a 10-hour shift. May be required to work in a non-air conditioned area. Vision protection, and steel-toed shoes are required. Hearing protection may be required.
