Job Description
The Business Administrator I, under general supervision, manages the full range of business activities including reviewing and approving business documents and developing, monitoring, and reporting accounts, budgets and other quantitative data.
Responsibilities:
As Business Administrator
  • Manages financial activities/affairs of the Vernon Unit (VERN) and Foundation Seed (FDSD). Implements business procedures and training staff accordingly; Interprets agency and system policies and regulations; Identifies business-related needs and problems of VERN & FDSD, proposing solutions. Analyzes resource allocations and operating fund requirements to the Unit faculty. Prepares and provides monthly Project Leader Reports to the Vernon faculty, with copies going to the Center Director. Serves as the VERN & FDSD Laserfiche administrator and the unit records management officer.
  • Oversees the daily management and business operations of four research farms, plus the Vernon Center; Works with landowners and TAMUS Real Estate Office to interpret, enforce, and renew leases as necessary, including USDA cost-shared land improvements; certifies spring and fall crop acreage plantings as well as grazing land acreage with county FSA offices and secures crop insurance coverage from vendors as appropriate; and actuates crop sales with warehouses/elevators, and allocates shares to Lessors according to lease agreements.
  • Serves as alternate accountable property officer. Assigns office, laboratory and storage space at the Vernon Center in consultation with Center Director. Manages infrastructure funds and projects; plans and manages facility upgrades, including irrigation and wastewater treatment systems designs and buildings and research facility repairs, replacements and renovations with Texas A&M AgriLife Engineering Office; manages allocation and reporting on Unit facilities, furnishings and equipment; prepares and analyzes business reports such as space allocation reports; administers the unit vehicle replacement process. Serves as water-master for irrigation operations at Lockett and reports all water-master information 4 Vernon-based properties at faculty meetings.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Center Director. Supervises and leads seven administrative/maintenance/farm employees at the Vernon Unit & Chillicothe Research Station; Recruits, trains and handles assimilation for these staff.
  • Serves as the Vernon Center Safety Officer and coordinates and reports the unit workplace chemical inventory; coordinates with AgriLife EHS Office on corrective actions and chemical hazardous storage and collection; prepares annual updates of the Crisis Management Plan for the Vernon center, subject to approval of the Center Director, District Extension Administrator, and the Director of Texas A&M Foundation Seed. Schedules, hosts, and provides followup on State Fire Marshall inspections. Serves as point of contact for decisions regarding weather closure of the Vernon Center. Serves as a member of the joint Research and Extension Center Coordinating Committee; serves in an advisory capacity to the faculty-led Crop Science Coordinating Committee.
  • Helps resolve conflicts pertaining to staff/faculty relationships at a Unit level in consultation with the Center Director; Provides liaison with the Director of Texas A&M Foundation Seed and Extension Office Manager for managing staff and joint business affairs for the Vernon Center, as well serves as a liaison with USDA-NRCS; USDA-FSA; Research cooperators; vendors; TAMUS Real Estate Office, and rental property lessors.
  • Performs other job related duties as required.
  • Coordinates the Texas A&M AgriLife Management Review Team internal oversight audits and follow-up reporting for the Vernon Center; Represents the Unit at in-service training functions for Business Administrators.
As Chillicothe Research Station Farm Foreman
  • Coordinates and assigns daily work schedules for supervised employees at the station to accomplish all research and production crop goals. Work with and train part-time employees and other project leader's technical employees in performing appropriate research tasks. Maintain schedule of planting and harvesting of production crops and research plots
  • Plans and monitors operating and production crop budgets
  • Works with Vernon Center's Crop Science Coordinating Committee to implement and manage research studies at CRS, Locket Farm, Smith Walker Research Unit, and other sites, including land allocations for studies.
  • Plans maintenance and improvements to infrastructure at CRS
  • Works with team members to coordinate maintenance and repairs to equipment
  • Maintain a schedule of irrigation systems, such as subsurface drip, furrow, side roll linear, and center pivot, as well as coordinate with team members to log water use and water well levels
  • Oversee and coordinate pesticide storage and use according to manufacturer's recommendation and university safety procedures. Maintain records related to purchase, storage, and use of pesticides. Ensure workers use appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure proper use of crop protection chemicals at CRS according to regulatory requirements.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Interpersonal and communication skills. Planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent oral, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability to effectively use personal computer to communicate, prepare proposals to include cost information on spread sheet as applicable, and provide reports of activities. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty and staff.
Preferred Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
Within six months of employment, must obtain Non-Commercial Texas Pesticide Applicator’s license issued by TDA
