Job description
Founded in 2016 with offices in Los Angeles (HQ) and New York and a staff of 37, M13 is a consumer technology venture capital firm that invests in the brightest founders building the future of consumer behavior in work, commerce, health, and money. M13’s Propulsion Platform is powered by one operating partner for every investing partner: our founders get access to deep operational expertise, tech tools, and a community that helps them build faster and better.
Messier 13 (or M13) is one of the brightest star clusters in the Northern sky. It’s full of remarkable individual stars, and when those stars come together, they create something that’s truly greater than the sum of its parts. All of us at M13 contribute to our collective success by being brighter together.

We are seeking a Business Analytics Engineer located in the New York or Los Angeles area to join M13’s Data team*, a key piece of our Propulsion engine and owner of its proprietary data platforms.
The Business Analytics Engineer will be instrumental in working cross-functionally to build the structure and processes to enable our small but mighty team to support our portfolio company teams in assembling the important businesses of the future. You will work closely with stakeholders across our Propulsion, Investing, Brand & Comms, and Investor Relations teams to iteratively build proprietary data platform capabilities that will enable the firm to operate faster, smarter, and with increasing efficiency, as we scale.
In this role, you will be responsible for managing and delivering projects from end-to-end, including understanding common workflows and cross-team dependencies, proactively diagnosing opportunities for refinement, and ideating entirely new tools that augment the data backbone behind all of the firm’s operating systems.
As a boutique VC in an ever-changing market with an ever-growing portfolio (175 companies and counting!), we continually need to evolve and scale our VC platform offering. We do this via our Propulsion engine, supporting our portfolio companies by providing valuable insight and expertise across critical functions in order to help our founders grow their businesses.
Who you are:
- You love structure (both for humans and data), and enjoy getting creative about how to architect more elegant, resilient and efficient systems and processes
- You geek out on automation that can compound small efficiencies into massive resource savers
- You are very resourceful and have a scrappy startup mindset; you have been a builder in a past life and enjoy working with a team, but also being able to exercise autonomy and leadership in your work
- You love when your work is directly connected to tangible outcomes, and are comfortable with imperfection when there is still a strong ROI to move forward
- You have 5+ years of experience managing databases, internal tools and software platforms for a variety of business stakeholders in a growth environment
- You have an analyst mindset, and experience working with stakeholders across different SaaS platforms – you’ve maintained data pipelines and user workflows in systems like HubSpot, Notion and Slack, including programming against a variety of APIs
- You have an expert understanding of, and experience managing relational databases (e.g. MySQL) and interdependent ETL processes (e.g. workflow management platforms like Airflow or no-code / low-code automation platforms like Make.com, Paragon or Retool)
- You have experience authoring and maintaining complex data models and managing data governance processes
- You enjoy working on multiple projects at once, and have managed a ticket-based sprint planning process to maintain visibility into a pipeline of interdependent technical tasks, ruthlessly prioritizing based on business needs – you love frequently reevaluating relative ROIs
- You have a strong interest in venture capital, technology, innovation and startups & want to be part of the ecosystem
What you’ll be doing:
- Managing the overall data architecture of the firm, to maximize internal capabilities and efficiency as well as to deliver data platform projects to our portfolio of startups (e.g. Prefered Partners, Founder Resources, Productized Knowledge)
- Lead and deliver projects end-to-end including measuring impact and iterating on our capabilities
- Partner with business stakeholders to understand their processes and data requirements to come up with robust solutions that meet their objectives and specific outcomes, while enforcing an overarching architecture built on unified taxonomies and single sources of truth for data creation and calculation
- Work intimately with our systems (e.g. Notion, Hubspot, Slack, Splash, Lever, Contentful) to ensure data is not only flowing between systems but is being used effectively to maximize its value
- Help us shape the vision for the M13 Propulsion Platform and the M13 Data Engine behind it, and execute upon building the best systems possible for our internal teams and our startups
What’s you’ll like working at M13:
- One Team, One Dream: A chance to work alongside world-class VC talent in a collaborative and developmentally-focused culture that is respectful, inclusive, diverse, and inspiring. You’ll do the best work of your life here and have fun doing it.
- Investment in Your Future: The base salary range for this position is between $130,000-$170,000. Actual compensation within this range will be dependent upon the candidate's skills, experience, qualifications, and level of impact in the role. Employees are also eligible for an Employee Profit Sharing Program and 401(k) Retirement Plan with matching for all employees.
- Comprehensive Health Package: Medical, dental, and vision plans that are thoughtful and supportive of the needs of each M13 employee.
- Open PTO Policy: We're focused on healthy work-life balance and therefore set no firm guidelines as to how much time off each employee is permitted to take.
Closing: Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend to only apply when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but don't necessarily meet every single point on the job description, please still get in touch. We'd love to have a chat and see if you could be a great fit.
