Information Technology Services at the University of Iowa is seeking to fill the position of Chief of Staff, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer. The Chief of Staff for the Office of the CIO will support and advise the University of Iowa’s Chief Information Officer on complex strategic and operational issues to ensure continuity for the OneIT organization. The COS will coordinate projects and activities between Senior Directors, Administrative and Collegiate IT Directors, University administrators, and other faculty, staff, and students as needed. This position will manage our planning, roadmap, and prioritization development processes, champion key leadership initiatives, and provide support to the CIO on operational and strategic initiatives. This role combines strategic planning, internal communications, organizational change and renewal, and cross-functional initiatives across IT activities. Reporting directly to the CIO, the successful candidate will work to align the leadership team, administration, and other stakeholders to drive optimal effectiveness of IT in supporting the University's strategic mission and operational activities.

This position is eligible for onsite or hybrid work arrangements.

Position Qualifications

Education/Equivalent Required

  • A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Progressive experience (Typically 5-7 years) in analysis for planning and project management required with particular focus in the management of IT projects and services preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working collaboratively with senior leaders/executives.
  • Proven experience leading successful change initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing projects within given time frames.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment and the knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse staff members.
  • Must have excellent analytical and communication skills, a strong customer service orientation and enthusiasm for the application of new technologies across a broad range of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated excellence and breadth of experience writing a variety of communication vehicles (messages, articles, policies, proposals, reports, etc.) for diverse audiences essential.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interactions with university faculty and administrators as well as representatives at other higher education institutions, government agencies, and industries.
  • Ability to engage and adapt productively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with impact over a broad scope of projects both within and external to the University.
  • Ability to effectively direct a creative unit with pressing schedules and deadlines.
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments.
  • Ability to create and deliver effective presentations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience and familiarity with campus-scale IT projects and services
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Demonstrated experience in planning for large conference presentations
  • Project management and/or Change management certification
  • Ability to work in and adapt to a complex changing environment with potentially conflicting priorities.
