Job description
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for translating healthcare providers' diagnostic and procedural phrases into coded form. Coding staff do this by reviewing and analyzing health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters. The coding function is the primary source for data and information used in health care, and promotes provider/patient continuity, accurate database information, and the ability to optimize reimbursement. The coding function also ensures compliance with established coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS
License /Certification
Required:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) from American Academy of Professional Coders; or
Certified Medical Coder (CMC) from Practice Management Institute; or
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P) from American Health Information Management Association.
Education
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent
Experience
Preferred:
One year of experience in a medical related setting with knowledge of medical terminology.
Two years of coding experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to operate a code finder is desirable.
