Job Description:

Responsible for assuring that sterile and non-sterile compounding practices are performed in a safe and efficient manner resulting in positive outcomes for patients. The Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for all activities related to supervising, coordinating and participating in activities related to compounding practices at Duke University Hospital. In collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager, and Duke Compounding Pharmacy and staff, he/she implements the strategic initiatives authorized by the Pharmacy Senior Management Group (SMG}. The Clinical Pharmacist has responsibility for the day-to day compounding activities to serve the needs of patients and customers of the Duke University Health System, by adhering to the contemporary pharmaceutical compounding standards established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA}, Controlled Environmental Testing Association (CETA}, State board of Pharmacy, the FDA, and similar related regulatory agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors, develops, and performs quality assurances practices required to prepare, store, and transport compounded sterile and non-sterile preparations.
  • Participates in the continuous improvement in practices and evaluation of procedures to ensure the quality of final preparations.
  • Ensures consistent success in compliance with enforceable rules and regulations related to sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical compounding at the Duke Compounding Pharmacy.
  • Maintains current knowledge and competencies required for compounding sterile preparations of all risk-level categories.
  • Able to develop sterile and non-sterile formulations for pharmaceuticals based on established literature and references.
  • Coordinates and monitors the pharmacy systems and processes to achieve ongoing operational and service improvements.
  • Ensures maintenance of safe medication management processes in the Duke Compounding Pharmacy.
  • Sets example for other pharmacists and staff in work quality, efficiency, productivity and personal conduct standards.
  • Collaborates with Pharmacy Manager to initiate modifications to improve productivity. Recommends cost containment programs, and policies and/ or procedures to improve efficiency, economy, and effectiveness.
  • Champions day-to-day management of operational priorities and collaborates with the staff to exceed customer service expectations.
  • Continuously monitors compounding activities and helps prioritize or direct pharmacy
  • technician activities to meet customer needs.
  • Facilitates solutions to problems and resolves complaints regarding departmental services and activities in collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager.
  • Projects a customer service attitude by being attentive, responsive, courteous and compassionate to customers (e.g., patients, physicians, nurses, and students).
  • Participates in proactive collaboration with the staff to establish a positive work culture.
  • Monitors employee performance and behaviors to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to maintain a safe and efficient workflow process.
  • Holds self and Duke Compounding Pharmacy staff accountable and responsible to maintaining compliance with Duke University Hospital's performance expectations and work rules.
  • Provides feedback to staff when observing unsafe practices or behaviors.
  • Notifies the Pharmacy Manager immediately when observing practices or behaviors that can adversely impact patient safety.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of staff. Promotes development of Duke Compounding Pharmacy staff.
  • Collaborates with the Pharmacy Manager and assists with responding to employee grievances.
  • Formulates departmental policy and procedure; ensures adherence to hospital, health system and departmental policies and procedures and applicable state and federal.
  • Assists the Pharmacy Manager with the evaluation, revision, and development of policies and procedures related pharmaceutical compounding at Duke University Hospital.
  • Provides education and training to pharmacists and technicians in relation to the established policies and procedures.
  • Enforces medical center and departmental policies and procedures and ensures compliance with pertinent state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Monitors and controls the controlled drug distribution system ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy.
  • Provides in-service education or drug information when needed or requested to health care professionals.
  • Responsible for providing annual competency training to individuals involved with sterile and non-sterile compounding at Duke University Hospital
  • Participates in residency education and training.
  • Strives to continuously improve the delivery of education and training related to compounding practices.
  • Participates on departmental, hospital, health system and school of pharmacy committees, actively participates in national, state and regional professional organizations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Competency with sterile and non-sterile preparations in accordance to all appropriate regulations
  • Competency with use of Excel, PowerPoint and word is preferred
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to manage day-to-day activities independently following successful completion of training

Minimum Qualifications


Education

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree


Experience

  • With a BS Pharmacy degree, two years of pharmacy practice experience, or acceptable board certification, or completion of an accredited residency program and demonstrated ability to achieve positive patient outcomes in a similar environment is required.
  • With Doctor of Pharmacy degree, no experience is required.
