The coach of any sports activity should consider such sport as an integral part of the total school program. Personnel in charge of such sports activities should utilize sound educational principles and practices in an effort to ensure that athletics is, at all times, a worthwhile part of the overall school program. Student involvement in the total school program must be encouraged and supported.
To be an athletics coach in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), an applicant must be interviewed and hired by the principal or designee at the school where the coaching vacancy exists. Coaches must be qualified and are hired for one season. Schools must hire qualified AACPS teachers or professional certified educators to coaching positions, if available.
Current AACPS permanent employees pay stipends are determined by the TAAAC negotiated agreement.
Non-AACPS permanent employees pay stipends are determined by the Athletics office based on years of experience when an offer is extended, no progression salary available.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?
No
1. Know and enforce all state, county and school athletic policies and procedures.
2. Attend appropriate meetings in the school and at the county level.
3. Attend appropriate rules interpretation meetings.
4. Be responsible for the distribution and collection of the school’s athletic equipment before, during and after the season.
5. Be responsible for squad members before, during and after a practice/contest.
6. Be responsible for the selection of a team captain.
7. Refrain from verbal and physical abuse towards players, coaches, officials, and spectators.
8. Maintain documentation for player participation in every athletic contest. IF appropriate documentation is not kept by the coach, an athlete in uniform will be considered a participant.
9. Avoid receiving financial gain or personal benefits from any returning players and/or parents.
10. Understand that any unauthorized purchases made by the coach in the name of the team or school in which the coach represent will be deducted from his/her coaching stipend. The coach will be responsible for all remaining charges in excess of the value of their stipend.
HEAD Coaches will:
a. Provide a set of written training rules/code of conduct policies to their students at the beginning of the season; refer to the Athletic Handbook (II. Athletic Personnel, Section 4, No.2a.) for guidance.
b. Determine the personnel of the team.
c. Submit a written team tryout rubric to the athletic director for approval.
d. Administer appropriate forms of discipline for infractions of athletic policies, rules, or regulations, consistent with the Administrative HELP Manual’s reference to due process.
e. Provide written communication to the student athlete regarding the requirements for earning an athletic award prior to the start of the season.
f. Submit to the athletic director an eligibility roster for certification at least one week before the first contest.
g. Collect and review completed required forms from each student athlete prior to their participation.
h. Submit a written inventory of equipment, supplies and uniforms at the conclusion of the season.
i. Submit all requested information by the proper deadlines for official use at the county, regional and state levels.
j. Familiarize themselves with all current medical protocols and guidelines involving interscholastic athletics.
k. Submit to the school nurse and athletic director, within on school day, a Standard Student Accident Report for any injury that results in a medical visit (Athletic Handbook, Form 2).
l. Perform all other duties as assigned.
ASSISTANT Coaches report to the head coach and will:
a. Work with the head coach to establish a uniform program at the varsity and junior varsity levels.
b. Provide the head coach with all requested information.
c. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Emergency coaches may be hired if no qualified AACPS teacher or professional certified educator is available.

Education/Experience/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
To be a certified coach, an applicant must:
- Be an AACPS teacher or professional certified educator employed by AACPS.
- Have completed or be enrolled in the two credit AACPS course "Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Coaching Fundamentals and CPR/AED" which is offered periodically through the AACPS Athletics Unit.
To coach as a Level I Emergency Coach, an applicant must:
- Be a certified teacher (though not employed by AACPS).
- Have completed the two credit AACPS course "Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Coaching Fundamentals and CPR/AED" which is offered periodically through the AACPS Athletics Unit.
To coach as a Level II Emergency Coach, an applicant must:
- Be a high school graduate.
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Have completed the two credit AACPS course "Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Coaching Fundamentals and CPR/AED" which is offered periodically through the AACPS Athletics Unit.
