General Job Summary: This position is responsible for the auditing of all coding and education to physicians and staff. This position is also responsible for coding, using a variety of designation codes, charts for surgery, and hospital care records for physician review and optimizing reimbursement. This position will also oversee the Compliance Program to ensure we are compliant and billing appropriately. This position is responsible for posting of these charges into the practice management system for claims submission. Maintain current records of hospital admissions, surgeries, discharges, and consultations as necessary. Assists the Coding Manager in resolving coding, billing and system issues.
Essential Job Functions:

  • Works with minimal supervision, under the general direction of the Coding Manager and COO to organize activities of the Coding Department.
  • Provide support to the department.
  • Provide training to incoming coders and update the Coding Manager of training opportunities for current staff.
  • Performs comprehensive medical records review to assure the presence of all component parts including patient and record identification signatures, dates where required, and other necessary data in the presence of all reports which appear to be indicated by the nature of the treatment provided.
  • Conduct regular coding audits for the staff and providers to ensure accuracy.
  • Reviews denials to determine if appropriate coding and modifiers was applied.
  • Reviews assigned codes to ensure the most accurate code was used to describe each documented diagnosis and/or procedures according coding guidelines along with modifier usage and medical terminology.
  • Reviews and researches billed unlisted procedure codes to determine if a more specific code is appropriate.
  • Provides training and education to staff and providers as the results of an audit warrants.
  • Maintains the records of the coding audits and Coding Compliance Manual.
  • Serves as a doctor liaison for the Coding Department.
  • Codes information correctly about procedures performed and diagnosis on charge, based on dictated notes.
  • Verifies and completes charge information in practice management system and produces billing.
  • Processes and distributes quality control of billing information according to clinic and HCFA compliance policies.
  • Maintains required billing records, reports, files, etc.
  • Perform other duties that may be necessary or in the best interest of the practice.

Requirements:Education/Experience: High school diploma. Associates degree in related field is preferred. Coding Certification through the AAPC for CPC and CPMA is required. Additional certifications of CEMC and COSC are preferred. Minimum of 7 to 10 years of previous coding experience is preferred.
Other Requirements: Schedules will change as department needs change.

  • Knowledge and proficiency of word processing, computer/pc and internet/email skills.
  • Knowledge and proper use of office equipment.

  • Detail oriented.

Abilities

  • Ability to understand and interpret policies and procedures.

  • Ability to maintain a 93% accuracy rate.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, calculators, etc.
Work Environment: Position is in a well-lighted office environment; noise level is low to moderate. Occasional Overtime work may be needed. Fast paced position.
Required Mental/Physical Demands: Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Manual dexterity using a calculator.
