Position Overview:
This newly created position will serve as the primary steward for the Museum’s collections of more than 25,000 works on paper and photographs. The
Collections Manager, Works on Paper will be responsible for the organization, cataloguing, housing and overall management of the works on paper and photographs collections. As the Museum is engaged in a major expansion, this position will also play a key role in planning and implementing the forthcoming Raysor Center for Works on Paper, which will encompass a public study room, collections storage and affiliated conservation labs and matting and framing studio.
Duties include:
Cataloguing new acquisitions of works on paper and photographs; creating and maintaining object records in The Museum System (TMS); reviewing and updating object records in TMS as necessary, including maker information, title, date, dimensions, inscriptions, media, exhibition history, bibliography and provenance.
Determining appropriate housing for current collections and new acquisitions according to best practices; creating and updating location information in TMS; anticipating storage requirements for new acquisitions; implementing a consistent strategy for the physical organization and labeling of collections and maintaining collection storage areas in a safe, orderly manner. May undertake or assist with inventories.
Providing collections support associated with acquisitions, exhibitions and programming. This includes pulling prints for review, creating object checklists, coordinating the movement of works on paper and photographs collections throughout the museum for exhibition, conservation, matting and framing and photography purposes, and assisting with acquisitions, board meetings and exhibitions as needed. May occasionally partner with curatorial staff to curate or co-curate exhibitions drawn from the permanent collection.
Managing or assisting with visits to view collections in the Study Room. Work with collections and curatorial staff to maintain guidelines for collection information and access. Schedule and supervise or assist with visits to the Study Room and, as requested, teach classes and make presentations on the collection to visitors and staff.
Interacting with public, scholarly and museum communities, responding to loan, research and other requests relating to relevant collections.
Training and supervising staff, interns and/or volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications
- Work experience organizing or cataloguing works of art or archives in a museum or similar institutional setting.
- Familiarity with collections management systems (preferably The Museum System).
- Strong written communication skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Suite.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, kneel, bend, push a cart through the museum and use a stepladder.
- Must have color vision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in art history, museum studies, library science, conservation or related field.
- Previous work experience as a collections manager, registrar or curatorial assistant.
- Experience cataloguing works on paper and/or photographs.
- Strong knowledge of museum registration practices.
- Strong knowledge of archival preservation methods for works on paper and/or photography, including housing materials, storage solutions and environmental concerns.
- Coursework and/or research experience in the history of photography and/or history of prints and drawings.
- Knowledge of French, German, Italian or Dutch.
Special Requirements
- Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
- Position requires employee to file a Statement of Economic Interests form annually.
