Vocational Enterprises is responsible for the operation of the Campus Work Program that enables approximately 200 of the individuals living at Murdoch to have paid employment in a variety of locations across the Murdoch campus. All the programs that VE operates, functions as a means for people of all ages to develop functional skills and behaviors that have been identified as education programs.
The primary purpose of this position (located within V.E. Originals) is to train basic vocational skills to small groups of individuals with developmental, behavioral and/or physical disabilities.
This position will be responsible for:
  • ensuring deadline dates for products ordered are met,
  • checking accuracy and daily documentation of work performed
  • providing input for some goal planning, activities, and recommendations regarding work assignments based on skills and abilities
  • conducting assessments to determine appropriate skill development
  • designing and constructing crafts (e.g., floral design, jewelry making, detail painting) for sale in V.E. Originals store with the assistance from the individuals who live at the Center.
Schedule work hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

About Murdoch Developmental Center:
MDC is one of three regional developmental centers operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF). MDC in Butner serves 25 counties in central NC. Murdoch has approximately 1600 employees providing residential services and supports to people with IDD, complex behavioral challenges and/or medical conditions whose clinical treatment needs exceed the level of care available in the community. In addition to regional admissions for adults, MDC operates four statewide programs, which include support for children and adolescents with complex needs. Centrally located, MDC is convenient to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. To be considered for employment, applicants must be in good standing with the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Qualified applicants must document, on the application, detailed experience of their work history showing that they possess all of the following:


  • Experience using behavior management techniques, task analysis techniques and teaching strategies for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
  • Experience assessing needs, and evaluating individual’s performance, as well as computer experience required to type progress/activity notes (MS Word).
  • Must have demonstrated crafting skills, which will involve painting, flower arrangements, bow making, and simple jewelry making.
  • Experience with building relationships with the community.
  • Must have ability to obtain NVCI, First Aid, and CPR certifications.
Management Preferences
Graduation from high school or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience providing instructions/training to individuals with intellectual disabilities (I/DD) in a vocational setting.
Prefer applicants with direct experience working with individuals intellectual disabilities

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Education and/or experience that is directly related to the job and results in demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least one year of experience performing tasks similar to the ones assigned;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Valid driver s license as applicable.
