Primary Purpose

Primary Purpose of Position:
The primary purpose of the Community Social Services Assistant involves working with usually elderly, disabled individuals in the Maple Leaf Adult Respite Center, which operates as an Adult Day Care, Day Health Program. This work generally involves encouraging and assisting participants to participate in activities such as music, physical exercise, crafts and so forth, but will also include some personal care assistance for those participants who qualify for Day Health services.
Assistance may be needed with eating i.e. cutting food, opening containers and does include feeding participants. Assistance may also be provided with general hygiene and does include toileting. This employee might be asked to provide training and assistance in personal care and community living skills.

Work of this position involves the following:
How to care for personal health and cleanliness
Leading recreational activities
Work with both groups and individuals
Maintain certification in CPR and First Aid techniques
Maintain CNA license, if applicable

This employee will also assist Social Work Staff in maintaining records, proper documentation and other required paperwork needed for current participant records.
This position will be supervised by the Human Services Coordinator and will be a part of the Social Work Division in the Department of Social Services. Daily direction and guidance will also be provided by the Human Services Coordinator, who is on site at the facility.

B. Work Schedule:
The Maple Leaf Adult Respite Center Program operates from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays, shift of 8 hours daily. This is not a residential program. Description of Responsibilities and Duties

1. Accuracy Required in Work:
This employee has to be precise, exact and accurate in assisting participants in this caseload. The well-being of the participant is affected by this employee"s ability and expertise.

2. Consequence of Error:
Participants worked with are usually not motivated, may be lonely and often live with other family members who work and need care for the participant. Services provided will aid in improving conditions for the individual and/or the family.

3. Instructions Provided to Employee:
The Human Services Coordinator provides orientation and technical assistance and overall supervision. The worker on a day-to-day basis is expected to communicate concerns to the Coordinator and work with him/her to address problems.
4. Guides, Regulations, Policies and References Used by Employee:
Technical advice is received from the Maple Leaf Adult Human Services Coordinator and CAP Social Work Supervisor II. Instructional manual and directives are provided as necessary.

5. Supervision Received by Employee:
This employee is directly supervised by the Human Services Coordinator and indirectly by the CAP Services Social Work Supervisor II and Social Work Aging and Adult Services Program Manager.

6. Variety and Purpose of Personal Contacts:
The employee in this position will have frequent to daily contact with adult caregivers, medical facilities, doctors, community college personnel, Cooperative Extension, Health Department, Mental Health and civic and community clubs.

7. Physical Effort:
The employee in this position must be able to meet the physical demands of assisting in performing food preparation, group excises and activities, as well as CNA duties and dealing with stressful situations on a daily basis.

8. Work Environment and Conditions:
The employee works in a fun, home-like setting with generally elderly, frail or disabled individuals who enjoy activities and socialization. Both physical and mental disabilities are prevalent among those participating in the Adult Day Health program. Must be team oriented and able to provide encouragement to participants.
9. Machines, Tools, Instruments, Equipment and Materials Used:
Copier machine, calculator, computer

Visual Attention, Mental Concentration and Manipulative Skills:
All work requires careful observational skills in regard to the participant"s physical environment, non-verbal communications and interactions between participant and family. The worker is constantly aware that judgment and decision making skills have monumental effects on the lives and well-being of numerous people.

Safety for Others:
This employee is assisting frail, elderly and disabled adults with issues affecting their safety and daily well being. Decisions and actions will have a long-term effect on the future of these individuals. Close supervision is required to ensure that participants with dementia and/or Alzheimer"s disease remain within the confines of the center, as wondering can become a dangerous possibility for some.

12. Dynamics of Work:
This employee will be engaged in individual and group activities. One-on-one individual attention will be necessary for some participants, while group activities such as special outings, etc. will be necessary for others. Qualifications
High School Diploma with an Associate degree preferred and two years of responsible job history working with families, along with a combination of education and life experience. Demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills and abilities gained through at least one year of experience in performing tasks similar to the ones assigned.
2. Successful completion of Nurse"s aide, home health aide or equivalent training course OR s minimum of one year of related experience caring for impaired adults

Additional Training/Experience:
Must have a valid driver"s license and full-time access to a vehicle. Working knowledge of dementia is preferred; however not required.

3. Equivalent Training and Experience:
None.
C. License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
CPR and First Aid certification Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Special Requirements - Basic knowledge of the social, economic and environmental conditions of participants to be served; Working knowledge of basic household tasks and management functions and ability to teach to others; Working knowledge and ability to enlist the aid of available community resources; Skills in basic reading, writing and simple mathematics; Ability to establish rapport and relate to population served and a variety of service disciplines (Social Workers, Doctors, Teachers, Family Members/Caregivers) and community businesses; Ability to prepare and maintain simple reports of activities; Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations; Ability to verbally communicate findings. Ability to assist participants with limited functioning with their ADL skills, such as ambulation, feeding, and toileting at times. Additional Information

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION:
Applicants must submit official college transcripts (if applicable). Applicants must have NC Driver"s License and access to a vehicle. The applicant must have a clean driving record with no more than three (3) points showing on current DMV record.
