Job description
From offices and labs in a location with a long history for excellence in aircraft innovation and design, the highly skilled staff at the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) WERX relies on hundreds of years of combined experience in the design, production and testing of aircraft and components to develop and execute unique projects no other team could tackle. Paired with the fresh and open minds of engineering and technical students at Wichita State University and WSU Tech, the WERX team implements innovative and efficient methods for the rapid development of engineering and testing plans for new aircraft, modifications/overhaul and electrical components. NIAR WERX is regularly seeking engineering services on a contract basis.
Summary of Responsibilities:
This position will support various diverse customer program efforts as as an independent contractor consulting as a Flight Systems Engineer.
Essential Functions:
- Oversees and confirms test aircraft configuration for flight tests, including testing instrumentation
- Performs technical review and processing of specific aircraft test planning documents, special instructions and test limitations
- Records and interprets test data
- Generates test plans with aerospace engineers specializing in certification and acceptance, and guide them through approval processes
- Undertakes flight test activities, test planning, test hazard analysis, test readiness, and safety reviews
- Generates flight test cards using scheduled test plans, article limits, flight clearances, weather, flight test instrumentation, equipment, conformity, and other program documents and procedures
- Plans flight tests, including selecting appropriate conditions, configurations, loadings, and concurrent testing
- Determines go/no-go requirements for successful completion of testing, including weather, flight test instrumentation, and aircraft system serviceability
- Conducts pre- and post-flight briefings, as well as other technical-based briefings to Flight Operations and other company personnel
- Works with certification authorities, including Transport Canada, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or a related field
- Five (5) years of progressive developmental flight test experience. Experience with the following: Serving as a flight test conductor in an airborne environment and in telemetryâ„¢ for missions up to high risk; Working with certification authorities
- Travel up to 25% of the time is required
- Professional and diplomatic demeanor
- Strong sense of accountability and integrity
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Time management skills to support multiple concurrent projects
- Proficient in use of standard Microsoft Office programs
