About the Role: Rebellyous Foods is seeking an experienced, conscientious, flexible, and detail-oriented Control Systems Engineer who enjoys making a difference, being a part of a team, and takes pride in working in a fast-paced, constantly changing early-stage startup environment, and who can thrive in an intensive manufacturing work environment. In this position, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining the monitoring and control systems for the equipment and process for the production of plant-based meat.

The Control Systems Engineer is a key member of the Equipment Research & Development team and reports to the Director of Equipment R&D. As such, we expect this engineer to be collaborative, detail oriented and provide technical leadership with a cross-disciplinary team.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Build and integrate local and global monitoring and controls systems into new equipment systems, for deployment in an industrial food manufacturing setting, at small and medium scale.
  • Develop robust system architecture and details of programming and sensor/auxiliaries specification, working with ER&D and other departments to define user requirements.
  • Work with vendors to specify components and manufacture custom industrial-grade electrical cabinets for equipment/controls systems.
  • Implement controls system via custom PLC and HMI and VFD programming, from scratch.
  • Integrate OTS equipment control systems with custom global monitoring and controls systems.
  • Integrate equipment monitoring and control with supply chain cloud (SAP) via materials lot code tracking.
  • Develop and deploy electromechanical safety interlock systems to maintain operator safety around novel equipment and systems.
  • Develop and integrate predictive maintenance monitoring for novel and OTS equipment.
  • Develop and maintain full system programming and wiring documentation.
  • Establish new and maintain existing standards for software and electrical components.
  • Support specification of electromechanical equipment (i.e. motors and actuators) for novel equipment.
  • Collaborate with other departments (food science, production, engineering operations, supply chain) to support deployment of OTS and novel equipment systems in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Provide ongoing support through a repair/rebuild of an existing end-to-end prototype system.
  • Fully document existing prototype system: Python monitoring and display system, CAN communications, and M4 Feather microcontroller (Arduino).
  • Lead design of process architecture for Lot Code Traceability w.r.t to control system design to monitor and control materials processing through mechanical processing systems.
  • Lead design of global e-stops and safety interlocks. Ensure proper design and execution of safety functions and secondary safety features (as applicable).

Qualifications:

Advanced skills and experience in industrial control systems and programming with an emphasis on hands-on completion of system builds.

  • 3+ years of experience programming PLCs and HMIs from scratch for industrial applications.
  • 3+ years of experience specifying sensors (temperature, pressure, etc) for industrial monitoring applications.
  • 3+ years of experience integrating existing equipment with novel control interfaces (such as programming EthernetIP handshakes between existing equipment and a new PLC).
  • 3+ years of experience specifying and integrating robust electromechanical operator safety devices and interfaces.
  • 3+ years of experience designing industrial electrical cabinets, including IP65+ ratings for cabinet and wire connections and harnessing.
  • 2+ years of experience programming and debugging VFDs.
  • 2+ years of experience debugging industrial and hobby-level electrical wiring.
  • 2+ years of experience programming custom Python data interfaces and microcontrollers (Arduino or similar).
  • 1+ years of experience specifying automated control valves for industrial fluid flow control applications.
  • 1+ years of experience programming industrial IoT/machine-to-cloud data interfaces for predictive maintenance, supply chain (SAP) integration, lot code tracking, etc.
  • 1+ years of experience preparing detailed documentation of custom and/or OTS electrical and software systems.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, or similar.
  • Solid experience in research, design or implementation teams in a real-world setting.
  • Flexibility, resilience, and self-starter attitude to work in a rapidly-iterating early-stage startup.
  • Experience collaborating with a multidisciplinary team - internal as well as external teams.
  • Strong attention to detail; excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and whiteboard-sketch communication skills.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills to balance multiple projects at once.
  • Commitment to food safety and continuous improvement.
  • A passion to make the plant-based meat industry succeed.
  • Ability to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19. (required)

Bonus Points:

  • 1+ years experience in food manufacturing, esp. equipment deployment for a daily-sanitation workflow.
  • 1+ years experience specifying food-safe sensors and control systems, including liquid flow monitoring systems.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A certification requirements for electrical cabinets.
  • 1+ years experience programming within and around industrial internet firewall systems to maintain a secure company network.
  • 1+ years experience working with CAD (Autodesk Inventor preferred).

Location: Greater Seattle area. This position is located at our facility in West Seattle, WA.

Salary: Commensurate with position and experience.
