About the Job:
In this role as a Correctional Recreation Leader, you will be responsible for leading recreation programs for offenders at a correctional facility. As with all employees of the Department of Correction, your first responsibility will be to ensure the safety and security of the facility.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Plan, organize, and conduct recreational activities for offenders including sports, crafts, or other related activities.
- Work closely with education, theraputic, custody, and volunteers to ensure that recreation programs run in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Act as a dispute resolver for all recreational acitivities.
- Teach offenders new recreational acitivities as needed.
- Design recreational programs that include components of leisure awareness, self awareness, decision-making, and social interaction.
- Ensure that the safety and security of the facility is maintained during recreational activities.

What We're Looking For:
- Must test negative on all drug screenings.
- The ability to successfully complete all required training.
- Broad knowledge of recreational acitivities to include sports, arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, and hobbies and collecting.
- Specific knowledge in one (1) or more of the areas of sports, arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, and hobbies and collecting.
- Working knowledge of community resources available.
What You'll Need for Success:
- The ability to plan, organize and supervise extra-curricular activities for offenders.
- The ability to maintain control of recreational equipment, tools and supplies.
- The ability and the specialized knowledge to engage offenders in recreational activities at multiple levels.
- Generalized knowledge of rules and laws that apply to specific sports and/or the ability research those rules or laws.
- Working knowledge of basic street slang and security threat groups.
- The ability to perform approved self defense techniques.
- Working knowledge of offender manipulation techniques.
- The ability to recognize and report signs of illness and inappropriate behavior.
- The ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
- The ability to communicate effectively both oraly and in writing.
- The ability to adhere to the Department of Correction's dress code and grooming standards.
- The ability to respond appropriately to an emergency situation.
- The ability to be a positive role model.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.
