Chevron is accepting online applications for the Counsel/Senior Counsel position through 02/01/2023 at 11:59pm. Pacific Time Zone.

This position is in the Upstream - Chevron North America Exploration and Production (CNAEP) Legal Department and is responsible for providing timely and fit-for-purpose legal services to the San Joaquin Valley Business Unit (“SJVBU”), headquartered in Bakersfield, California. The position requires upstream oil and gas legal and transactional experience and supports the full range of SJVBU operations. Strong advocacy skills and experience are preferred (especially experience managing right to operate challenges). The position requires working closely with, among others, Asset Development; Land; Commercial; Finance; Health, Safety and Environmental; Strategy and Planning; Operations; Corporate Affairs; Supply Chain Management; and Compliance personnel. The Counsel/Senior Counsel will report to the Supervising Counsel of the San Joaquin Valley legal group in Bakersfield.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Provides legal advice and counsel in support of all SJVBU operations, including land rights, production, development, transportation, abandonment, environmental, and legislative and regulatory compliance

  • Works with Corporate Affairs on state advocacy, legislative and regulatory strategy, local community affairs, and engaging the full range of external stakeholders

  • Collaborates with Chevron New Energies to support low carbon and new technology initiatives

  • Drafts, reviews and/or approves complex contracts across a full range of land, operations, supply chain, and commercial matters, as well as significant transactions and business activities

  • Works with management and the North America Litigation team to manage and resolve disputes with third parties

  • Offers general corporate and legal advice on compliance requirements, risk exposures and mitigation in areas such as antitrust, bankruptcy, corporate governance, employment, health, environmental and safety, information technology, procurement, public lands and policy

  • Partners with other Law practice groups, including Environmental and Safety, Litigation, and other Upstream and CNAEP Law groups, as appropriate

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor in Law from an accredited U.S. law school

  • Active membership in the State Bar of California, or actively admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction

  • Upstream oil and gas legal experience (preferably 10+ years), including experience drafting, negotiating, and closing oil and gas transactions and providing legal advice and counsel to clients

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with California legislation and regulation governing oil and gas operations

  • Experience supporting Upstream U.S. and state advocacy/legislative and regulatory strategy

  • Experience resolving environmental matters, including notice of violations and abandonment/decommissioning
