Description

Scope of Responsibilities: Responsible for all aspects of Utility’s treatment plant equipment, pump stations, and related such as preventive maintenance, repairs, etc. Works with Utility mechanics and electricians as needed or required.

NOTE: These positions are part of the UTILITY CAREER PATH process and are set up to allow the employee to progress automatically to the next position upon achievement of the noted qualifications. The “Scope” and “Duties” listed on this page are basic to all levels; the “Qualifications” detail and determine the expertise and experienced required for each position. Each successive level includes all the requirements for the prior level.

Safety Sensitive - YES

This position has been evaluated as to whether a momentary lapse of attention may result in grave and immediate danger to the employee, coworkers, or the public. If the designation is yes, the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act (AMMA) of 2016 will govern working conditions. If no, the AMMA will not apply to the position.

Uniform Required – YES
This position has been evaluated as to the mandated wearing of a company uniform during working hours.


Examples of Duties

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Performs preventive maintenance of equipment such as greasing, cleaning, changing oil, rebuilding pumps, repairing equipment, and troubleshooting.
  • Performs major and minor maintenance on equipment, including overhaul.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of all work performed.
  • Cleans tools and equipment and returns to proper area.
  • Keeps work areas (including shop and storage areas) in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Completes required feedback on work orders so information can be used for maintenance history and accounting.
  • Assists other mechanics and disciplines as required.
  • Reports possible problems so that shop job/work orders can be initiated (based on observations while completing other work orders).
  • Complies with recommended safety practices and guidelines at all times, which includes wearing proper safety attire.
  • Stays up to date on the process, equipment, and other components for each treatment facility.
  • Works successfully, as part of a team, with all personnel and departments in a positive and professional manner.
  • Follows established work procedures and practices.
  • Follows safety practices and guidelines at all times, including wearing proper personal protective/safety equipment due to possible exposure to hazardous chemicals, flammable liquids, biological hazards, toxic/flammable compressed gases and confined spaces.
  • Undertakes any reasonable request within capabilities that is for the good of the community and UTILITY.

High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience & Training

Some general mechanical experience.

Minimum 1.5 years as Mechanic Tech I and attained Step 3.

Minimum 2 years as Mechanic Tech II and attained Step 3.

Task Description:
Install, maintain, and repair the pumps and machinery at all LRWRA facilities.

Hazard Type:

Electrical, BBPs, chemical handling, lifting and bending, rotating and sheering machinery pinch points, overhead cranes and rigging, noise, grinding, weather extremes, Confined Spaces

Hazard Description:

Electrical: exposer to high voltage if LOTO not observed or using a crane near power lines
BBP: contact with sewer contaminated materials
Chemical: handling and use of solvents, oils, and other chemicals
Lifting and bending: moving items up to 50 lb without the use of a hoist working in awkward positions.
Rotating, Pinch, and Sheer: working with machinery that can entangle or cut the user.
Overhead cranes and rigging: exposure to work where a crane and knowledge of proper rigging for lifting is required.
Grinding: exposure to dust and debris that could harm the lungs or eyes.
Noise: Exposure to environments with high noise levels.
Weather Extremes: working in storms, ice, floods, and heat.
Confined Spaces: work is often performed in a confined space and requires proper atmospheric monitoring, mechanic retrieval, and fall protection devices.

Training, PPE, and Engineering Controls

Hazard Controls:

Training: Employees are trained to recognize the hazards of each task and the proper PPE required to work safely with the exposed hazards. This includes Proper lifting techniques, crane and rigging certifications, BBP and HAZCOM
PPE: is made available and required to be worn while preforming hazardous tasks. Items include foot, face and eye protection, gloves, and particulate respirators, protective clothing, hardhat and hearing protection. Gas monitors, man hoists, and fall protection
Engineering Controls: Use LOTO and observe safe distancing to avoid electrical hazards

Rational or Comment:
Position is not authorized to work with live electrical current and must observe LOTO procedures.
Must be familiar with operating a mobile crane in proximity to power lines.
