UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the CPAESS Project Scientist I - Atmospheric Science. This position will conduct research projects to quantify the impact of existing and proposed observing systems on analysis and forecasts of the atmosphere, with focus on global scales. For this purpose, observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) and observing system experiments (OSEs) will need to be performed with NOAA’s systems for different types of observations. As required, data assimilation algorithms will need to be developed, implemented, and tested. Statistical and verification methods will need to be applied to quantify the impact of observations.
The Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) serves the Earth system science community in three distinct areas of service. We partner with federal agencies and businesses to hire critical scientific staff enabling a more robust workforce. Through our scientific programs we seek to edify new research with our postdoctoral programs, our visiting scientist and internship programs, along with our interagency support programs. We also help build the Earth system science community by convening and managing summer schools and institutes, conferences, and advisory committees.
Program Location: Boulder, CO or Remote (must reside in the United States)
Job Location Type: Duty station is flexible, and can be remote or onsite in Boulder, CO.
Hiring Range: $89,420 - $111,775

At UCAR, you will work alongside a dedicated team of professionals conducting critical research and community outreach to solve complex Earth system science problems including climate change, air pollution, extreme weather, floods, drought, wildfires, and space weather, all with the goal of improving human life and reducing economic loss. HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT AT UCAR
This position will conduct research projects to quantify the impact of existing and proposed observing systems on analysis and forecasts of the atmosphere, with focus on global scales.
Key Responsibilities
- Leads research projects to evaluate the impact of proposed and existing observation systems on analyses and forecasts of the atmosphere on a global scale. Conduct observing system experiments (OSEs) and observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) to quantify impact of observing systems to improve numerical weather prediction.
- Develops and tests improvements to numerical algorithms, including simulation and assimilation of satellite and conventional observations in NOAA’s models.
- Conducts numerical weather prediction experiments and interprets results.
- Authors and presents scientific reports and publications and attend/give presentations at national or international scientific conferences.

Education & Experience

Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a related field

Knowledge of numerical weather prediction, remote sensing, and statistical analysis;

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired, but not required: Experience with data assimilation and data denial experiments.
