With 70 beds, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) is an acute care community hospital committed to delivering excellence in patient care and meeting the current and emerging health needs of the North Fork and Shelter Island. At SBELIH, inpatients are under the care of world-renowned hospitalists, physicians who specialize in inpatient medicine and taking care of hospitalized patients in place of a primary care provider. Centers of excellence include Medical-Surgical, Advanced Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health, Emergency, Geriatric, Diagnostic Services, Physical Therapy and Gastrointestinal Services. SBELIH is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and has been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval.

The opportunity:

In this role you will be responsible for setting recreational and leisure time activity services provides for treatment, development, maintenance and expression of an appropriate leisure/social lifestyle for individuals with physical, mental , emotional or social limitations.

How you will impact the Hospital

• Initiates and maintains performance improvement data and analyses for the behavioral health units.
• Provides counseling designed to help patients to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for independent, leisure/social involvement, adjustment in the community, decision making ability and appropriate use of free time.
• Monitors and documents the extent to which patient goals are achieved relative to the use of the leisure time and acquisition of socialization skills.
• Completes inventories and requisitions for supplies, equipment and equipment repairs
• Provide an assessment of the patient’s leisure, social and recreational abilities, deficiencies. Interests, barriers, life expectations needs and potential
• Provides treatment designed to improve the social, emotional cognitive and physical functional behaviors as necessary prerequisites to future leisure/social involvement.
• Completes order entry appropriate to patients attendance and scheduled recreation groups
• Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner.

To be successful:

• Master's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Creative Arts Therapy required
• Certification or certification eligibility as TR specialist preferred
• Current and valid NYS Creative Art Therapist licensure required
• Minimum of two (2) year of Behavioral Health/Addiction services
• Ability to work effectively with others
• Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

Pay: $33.00 - $44.00 per hour
