Job description
Under the direction of the Director, Cultural Resource, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in programs to promote cultural awareness of native people in the Northeastern United States, specifically Eastern Woodland indigenous populations. The incumbent will provide hands on dance instruction for all female intertribal & eastern social dance styles, share knowledge of origins and meaning of dance and dance regalia. Will identify Pequot beadwork designs and provide hands on instruction on how to incorporate them in regalia and applique. Assists with sewing and will operate sewing machine.Must be a Tribal Member of any Northeast Federal or State recognized Tribe. Must have prior work with a tribal entity. High School diploma required. Strong interpersonal skills required.
Must have knowledge in Female Inter-Tribal Dances (Jingle, Fancy Shawl, Eastern-Northern & Southern Traditional dance styles as well as Eastern Algonkian social dance styles, Stomp/Robbin/Rabbit/Mosquito/Duck/Stick/Snake/Alligator/Green Corn/Moccasin & Round). At least two (2) years of experience with Native American design applique is preferred. Three (3) years of experience with beadwork (Flat/Lazy/Raised, etc.) is preferred). Must be willing to learn and teach the Pequot Language to tribal members.
Must be capable of working flexible work hours and days.
