General Functions:
Under the direction of the Arts Director, the Dance Assistant is a team player who demonstrates strong skills in class and lesson development; organization; interpersonal, verbal and written communication; and collaborative relationships. The Dance Assistant’s responsibilities include assisting the instructor with all classroom management tasks to keep students safe and having fun. Excellent customer service skills must be practiced with parents and participants. Dance instructors and assistants will teach the principles of dance education in the given genre of the class, while keeping in line with the YMCA values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assist in dance lessons that increase the knowledge of dance principles as well as expand the student’s interest in dance.
- Create a safe and trusting creative environment in the Studio.
- Ensure the safety of all students.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Studio with a team effort of the class.
- Communicate respectfully and clearly to all students and parents.
- Reinforce positive behaviors and creative strides.
- Handle disruptive behaviors in accordance with the Arts Orientation Packet.
- Actively participate in promoting the Y-Arts program at the YMCA and in the community.
- Follow all guidelines and procedures stated in the Arts Orientation Packet.
- Actively pursue learning opportunities related to art education and character development.
- Maintain required paperwork for the Arts Director.
- Sustain open communication between Arts Director and fellow art instructors.
- Attend mandatory YMCA trainings as/when required.
- Assist in choreographing dance routines for each class.
- Assist in measuring students for costumes and assist in costume ordering.
- Assist in a session-end recital under the guidance of the Arts Director.
Experience and Education:
- Prior experience in dance.
- Prior experience working with children prefered.
Qualifications:
- Possess and demonstrate excellent organizational, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, decision-making, problem solving and leadership skills.
- Possess strong experience and skills in their given field of fine arts.
- Provide examples of personal art work to demonstrate their abilities.
- Possess and demonstrate ability to work both within a team and independently.
Trainings & Certifications:
- Must complete online Bloodborne Pathogens and Employee Safety training prior to initial assignment to position.
- Must complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90-days of employment.
- Must attend and complete Listen First and Youth Protection within 90-days of employment.

Physical Demands:
Ability to frequently stand, sit, walk, talk, hear, kneel, bend, reach, balance, crouch, climb and/or balance, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, stoop, climb a minimum of two flights of stairs (approximately every ½ hour), lift/move and carry approximately 30 pounds, and use hands and fingers. Special vision abilities required close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
