Description/Job Summary
Simpson Thacher's Data Analyst helps turn raw data into information, insight and discrete solutions for our lawyers, clients and operational support staff. This versatile role will work across business functions using quantitative skills and ingenuity to improve the ways in which the Firm's digital assets are consumed, understood and acted upon.
The Data Analyst will conduct research and business analysis related to Firm and third-party data and associated systems. The Firm's Data Analyst will package insights into visual, easy-to-consume forms that help our users make important business decisions quickly and easily. This position will interact regularly with executive staff and lawyers, requiring the ability to synthesize complex information and effectively communicate nuanced data insights.
The Data Analyst will be a part of the Data Analytics Group, which is positioned within the Firm's Knowledge Department. The Knowledge Department's mission is to improve client value, efficiency and professional satisfaction by streamlining processes, capturing and leveraging the Firm's knowledge, by turning matter data into useful insights, and by helping lawyers find documents and information faster.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Work with Firm operations, practice groups and Knowledge teams to capitalize on opportunities to leverage data to drive strategic decision making and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Firm
- Conduct thorough technical analysis related to data-oriented projects, including capturing data flow across systems, assessing data quality and viability, and transformations required for target state solutions
- Design, deploy and maintain highly visual reports and dashboards that surface quantitative insights in forms that are fit-for-purpose, modern and accessible
- Extract, transform and load data from primary and secondary sources for use in reporting and other solutions
- Develop custom measures, key performance indicators and visuals based on input from Firm Practice, Knowledge and Data resources
- Develop and maintain documentation required to ensure alignment on and go-forward support of complex solutions and deliverables
- Conduct analysis related to the Firm's data governance initiatives
- Assist with technical administration and curation of the Firm's data catalog
- Handle projects on request under the direction of the Director of Data Analytics, Manager of Data Analytics and other executive staff
Required Skills
- Proficient with SQL and SQL Server Management Studio
- Familiar with statistical programming languages such as Python or R
- Ability to translate business problems into technical requirements
- Able to communicate complex results clearly to a non-technical audience
- Curious, detail-oriented and pragmatic
Required Experience
- 2+ years of overall experience in a relevant, quantitative role
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with or within a data science program a plus
- Experience in the legal field is a plus
- Competency with enterprise data visualization platforms a plus (e.g. MS Power BI, Tableau)
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree required; preferably in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering or finance

Salary Information
The estimated base salary range for this position is $110k to $125k at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
