The mission of the Healthcare Epidemiology Program is to work to eliminate Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) and combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) by collaborating with federal and state stakeholders across the healthcare continuum, and the public.
Objectives of the program include 1) responding to healthcare facility public health threats such as outbreaks related to medical devices or procedures and emerging/re-emerging pathogens that express a high resistance to antimicrobial agents or have the ability to spread quickly (e.g. Ebola, COVID-19, carbapenemase-producing organisms, Candida auris); 2) conducting surveillance or accessing data relevant to HAI and AR; and 3) use that data to reduce and prevent HAIs and AR in Maine by working directly with healthcare facilities and stakeholders.

Specific qualifications needed to perform the job including: necessary licenses, knowledge, skills, education, experience, training, and technical skills.
Required knowledge, skills, and certifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree and at least three years of work experience with data analytic software such as SAS, SQL, Access, R and/or other analytical tools.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America, able to provide proof of residency, and able to obtain a federal security clearance through the Secure Access Management Services (SAMS) for use of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), a federal HAI and AR database.
- Strong data analysis and data visualization skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft WORD, Excel, Power Point, Access.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others from various professional backgrounds.
- Ability to multitask between different projects and/or functions at the same time.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize and utilize resources to complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
- Experience with GIS mapping software.
- Experience with the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) database.
- Experience utilizing Medicare, Part D data.
- Experience with All Payer Claims Data (APCD).
- Experience with National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) software.
- Experience with Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) software.
Specific duties required of the resource, as well as any expected deliverables, including necessary travel expectations.
Specific Job Duties:
- Obtain access to, pull, organize, and analyze data from a variety of databases for use by program staff for response activities.
- Conduct data cleaning and data quality activities in various data bases.
- Work with program and non-program partners to conduct data validation activities.
- Compiling reports for grant metric reporting and enter data into database.
- Develop spreadsheets or databases for data entry and/or compilation of infection prevention and control assessment, accreditation survey, and other data.
- Design graphs, charts, etc. from data for reports and presentations.
- Other duties as assigned.
In-State Travel: Not anticipated.
Out-of-State Travel: Not anticipated.
Schedule
A summary of work schedule, including normal working hours, on-call expectations, allowed time off (which is non-billable), ability to work remote.
Normal working hours: This position is a 0.5 FTE, a.k.a. 20 hours per week. Availability should align with general office hours, which are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Alternate work hours possible, however, will need approval by the Department Program Manager.
On-call Expectations: This position does not come with a routine on-call expectation.
Allowed time off: Any requests for non-billable allowed time off will need approval by Department Program Manager.
Ability to work remotely: This position will likely be eligible for remote work; however, employee must live within Maine. Employee may have access to a local State of Maine public health offices, in one of six location across the state, via a shared/drop-in space with use of conference rooms and shared office equipment. When working remotely, travel to any local state public health office or other location for staff or project meetings will not be eligible for travel reimbursement but will be part of salary.
