Job Summary: The Data Architect provides the technical expertise for the design, modeling and implementation of the organization's SAP BW on HANA Enterprise Data Warehouse. Utilizes functionality of the SAP BW on HANA environment and its surrounding components to provide real time/near real time data availability and meet business decision-making requirements through reports, dashboards, self-service and advanced analytics capabilities. Designs and manages integration/dynamic tiering of data between HANA and Hadoop data lake. Architects data solutions that integrate data in the EDW following established security policies.
Principal Duties:
  • Responsible for the architecture and design of the data for SAP BW on HANA. Responsible for both structured and unstructured data design into SAP BW on HANA.
  • Perform data analysis, data modeling and data design tasks on complicated datasets with potentially complex data integration scenarios for Hadoop and SAP BW on HANA. Design Enterprise Data Warehouse using SAP BW on HANA and native HANA platform.
  • Translate complex business and functional specifications into detailed technical design documents, applying SAP BW on HANA best practices, to provide efficient and maintainable reporting solutions, Dashboards, Self-service analysis.
  • Based on technical design, build integrated BI solutions using SAP BW on HANA objects. These include both persistence layer (DataSources, InfoSources, InfoObjects, aDSOs, Hierarchies, Open Hub Destinations) and virtual layer (Composite Providers, open ODS Views, external HANA views, attribute views, analytical views, and calculation views).
  • Lead major technical initiatives, large development projects and upgrades in SAP BW on HANA and HANA. Lead internal and inter-team development projects and initiatives. Facilitate issue resolution between the BI team and the external IT business partners as appropriate.
  • Design and build HANA data models for BI tools like Tableau, MicroStrategy and other tools that are introduced.
  • Design and build data transformation, extraction, and load processes (ETL), including enablement of delta loads for both SAP-sourced and non-SAP data. Use scripting (e.g. SQL, Python) or ABAP AMDP to create automated load processes. Objects include Transformations, APDs, HAPs (HANA Analysis Process).
  • Create reporting objects, including SAP queries, variables, and reporting structures using BEx Query Designer or Eclipse-based BW Query functionality of HANA Studio. Use Web Application Designer for iViews and SAP Portal integration. Build and enable report and data distribution via broadcast, SAP portal, MicroStrategy, or other tools.
  • Implement bi-directional integration of HANA with AWS based data lake S3, MicroStrategy, Tableau, Snowflake and other reporting and analytical tools using SDI, SDA, HDFS, ODBC or other ETL tools.
  • Handle technical testing for all phases from unit testing through integration testing. Debug SAP BW HANA and related components.
  • Implement solutions in production, including BW and HANA CTS+ transports and job scheduling, including process chains.
  • Analyze and maintain objects and structures to achieve optimal performance.
  • Manage data and apply retention policies in a periodic manner to maintain optimal HANA storage growth.
  • Maintain legacy BW objects as required, or convert to newer object types. Legacy objects include DSOs, InfoCubes, MultiProviders, InfoSets, Update rules, Transfer rules.
  • Develop and implement data design methods, data structures, and modeling standards which work with multiple business intelligence tools.
  • Investigate and resolve Business Intelligence production problems.
  • Partner with administrative system management teams on BI performance, system maintenance, and security. Establish performance and other system administration metrics (e.g. database growth, response times) Monitor system load and reporting and tune for peak performance. Use resources including vendor Knowledge Base and Notes.
  • Develop, promote and implement team processes and technical standards, including design and support documentation for any modified or developed BI components.
  • Provide primary and second level support for BI processes to identify and resolve any recurring issues.
  • Research and recommend new technologies to increase productivity and performance. Participate and provide input and guidance to tool selection.
  • Adhere to Corporate EIM (Enterprise Information Management) standards throughout BI reporting.
  • Act as technical consultant for BI team and internal business teams. Serve as an expert in technical BI field of knowledge and proactively share new learning with others to improve organizational efficiencies.
  • Constantly learn and be current in data warehouse systems and tools and conduct POC’s on new features to enable them for future implementation.

  • Create and update project plans with timelines and milestones and adhere to them and to external deadlines
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a technical discipline (e.g. engineering) preferred
  • 10+ years of hands-on design and development experience including 3-5 years of SAP BW, and 1-2 years with HANA. BW 7.4 on HANA, with BW 7.5 preferred
  • In depth experience with HANA Studio (e.g. Advanced DSO’s, ODS Views, Composite Providers etc.) and modeling in BW
  • Familiarity with Self-Service applications on top of SAP-BW/HANA
  • Understanding legacy BW infrastructure and relationship to HANA objects (e.g. InfoCubes and MultiProviders vs aDSOs, Composite Providers, and HANA Views)
  • Experience with S4 is a plus
  • Experience with BI extractors from the ECC system and working knowledge of SAP structures, object dependencies, and tables in version ECC 6.0 environment
  • Hands-on experience on ABAP in BW writing ABAP code in DataSource enhancements, function module extractors, routines, BEx exits
  • Experience with SAP HANA programming including SQL, SQL script
  • Experience with SAP HANA data provisioning (SDI – Smart Data Integration preferable)
  • Experience in using mixed scenarios with SAP BW components such as Composite Providers and Open ODS Views with native HANA Tools
  • Experience in handling integration among multiple systems for reporting such as SAP ECC, SAP BW, Hadoop, SAS, MicroStrategy, Tableau
  • Transport management of both classic BW and HANA objects
  • Knowledge of Hadoop
  • MicroStrategy or Tableau experience
  • Data administration experience including managing schemas and data model objects preferred
  • Familiarity with AMDP processes and structures needed for HANA Stored Procedures preferred
  • Experience leading large and complex projects
  • Possess deep technical knowledge of SAP BW on HANA including performance optimization, ETL/ELT, integration with big data platform and interaction with other systems and Business Intelligence tools (e.g. Hadoop, MicroStrategy, Tableau).
